Women’s 100 back

Etiene Medeiros, who lost out on a chance to make the Olympic team yesterday by scratching the women’s 100-meter fly finals, clinched her spot on the Rio roster with a 1:00.11 in the women’s 100-meter back today.

That, along with her 1:00.00 from prelims, secured her a spot on the Brazilian Olympic roster.  Medeiros’ personal best is a 59.61 from the 2015 Pan American Games last year.

Katarina Listopadova of Slovakia finished second in 1:00.67, just missing the FINA A cut of 1:00.25.  Natalia De Luccas placed third overall in 1:01.11.

Maria Pessanha (1:02.63), Daynara De Paula (1:02.83), Ana Zortea (1:03.71), Yang Yifan (1:03.81) and Aline Caetano (1:04.02) also competed in the finale.

Men’s 200 free

Coming into tonight, Nicolas Oliveira (1:46.97) and Joao De Lucca (1:47.77) had each cleared the FINA A cut of 1:47.97.

This evening, De Lucca won with a time of 1:47.65, but still stood second to Oliveira’s time from prelims for the overall Olympic qualifying.

Felipe De Souza turned in a 1:47.92, but did not leap ahead of De Lucca for the second spot on the Olympic team.

Oliveira placed third tonight in 1:48.17, while Andre Pereira took fourth in 1:48.72. That means De Souza and Pereira each picked up a relay spot on the 800-meter freestyle relay.

Giovanny Lima (1:48.94), Gabriel Ogawa (1:49.63), Joao Amorim (1:49.70) and Federico Grabich (1:50.09) also competed in the finale.

Luiz Altamir won the B final in a time of 1:48.29, also making the 800 free relay squad should the team qualify.

Women’s 100 breast

Argentina’s Macarena Ceballos won the finale in a time of 1:08.03.  That missed the FINA A cut of 1:07.85 to guarantee a spot on Argentina’s Olympic roster.

Meanwhile, Jhennifer Conceicao locked down the breaststroke leg of the Brazilians 400 medley relay with a 1:08.31 for second in the event.

Julia Sebastian claimed third-place honors in 1:08.85 with Ana Carvalho taking fourth overall in 1:09.31.

Beatriz Travalon (1:10.01), Renata Sander (1:10.07), Juliana Marin (1:10.08) and Sae Saito (1:11.31) snared fifth through eighth in the finale.

Men’s 100 back

Guilherme Guido, who already put up a 53.08 South American record in December and a 53.10 during prelims, secured his spot on the Olympic roster with a 53.25 in finals.

Henrique Rodrigues placed second in 54.41, just off the FINA A cut of 54.36, while Vitor Gauraldo captured third-place honors in a time of 54.63.

Leonardo Guedes (54.84), Fabio Santi (54.86), Fernando Santos (54.86), Gabriel Fantoni (55.30) and Henrique Machado (55.78) picked up the rest of the finishes in finals.

Women’s 400 free

Lyrio clocked a top time of 4:09.48, clearing her own mark of 4:09.96 from the 2015 Brazil Open. She just barely missed the FINA A cut of 4:09.08 in the process.

Katarina Listopadova finished second in 4:14.02 with Viviane Jungblut taking third in 4:15.58.

Bruna Primati (4:15.65), Chinatsu Sato (4:16.36), Aline Rodrigues (4:16.84), Julia Volkmann (4:17.89) and Carolina Bilich (3:51.51) also swam in the finale.
