Women’s 50 back semis

Australia’s Minna Atherton unleashed a World Junior record in the women’s 50-meter back semis at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Atherton blasted her way to a 27.92 in semis to lower her own record of 28.00 from prelims.

That swim put her 10th in the world rankings this year as she continues to drive towards the world record of 27.06 set by Zhao Jing back in 2009.

New Zealand’s Gabrielle Fa’Amausili qualified second in 28.14 with Canada’s Danielle Hanus snaring the third seed in 28.27.

New Zealand’s Bobbi Gichard (28.57), Russia’s Irina Prikhodko (28.76), Germany’s Laura Riedemann (28.86), South Africa’s Mariella Venter (28.88) and USA’s Grace Ariola (28.94) also earned transfer spots into the finale.

Czech’s Tereza Grusova then beat Austria’s Caroline Pilhatsch for the first alternate spot in a swimoff, 29.12 to 29.23.

Men’s 200 breast finals

Russia’s Anton Chupkov was at it again, this time with a meet record time in the men’s 200-meter breast finals at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Chupkov raced his way to a winning effort of 2:10.19 in the finale.  That swim broke his own mark of 2:10.73 set earlier in the meet, but fell short of his World Junior record of 2:09.64 clocked at Worlds.

Australia’s Matthew Wilson placed second tonight in 2:11.23 with Japan’s Ippei Miyamoto claiming third overall in 2:11.59.

Women’s 50 fly finals

Japan’s Rikako Ikee just missed the World Junior record with a meet mark in the women’s 50-meter fly finale at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Ikee scorched the finale with a time of 26.28, breaking her own mark of 26.30 from yesterday.

That time came up just short of Rozaliya Nasretdinova’s World Junior record of 26.28 set at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Canada’s Penny Oleksiak continued her strong meet with another silver as she touched in 26.45.

Russia’s Mariia Kameneva rounded out the podium with a third-place effort of 26.47.

China’s Wang Jingzhuo (26.51), Australia’s Lucia Lassman (26.86), Australia’s Gemma Cooney (26.97), Slovakia’s Barbora Misendova (27.00) and Hungary’s Szonja Szokol (27.37) comprised the rest of the championship field.

Men’s 50 back finals

USA’s Michael Andrew cranked out a near-World Junior record time with a meet record in the men’s 50-meter back at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Andrew hit the wall in 25.13 for the victory, breaking his own mark of 25.14 set yesterday.

That time just missed Evgeny Rylov’s World Junior record of 25.09 from the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China from last summer.

It was a strong response for Andrew following a disappointing early start to the meet for Andrew that featured a five-swim night on the second evening of swimming.

Canada’s Javier Acevedo raced his way to silver in 25.46, while Egypt’s Mohamed Samy and Venezuela’s Robinson Molina shared bronze with matching 25.54s.

Egypt’s Youssef Abdalla (25.63), Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez (25.75), Greece’s Nikolaos Sofianidis (25.79) and Russia’s Roman Larin (26.13) finished fifth through eighth.

Women’s 100 breast finals

Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes continued to be one of the top swimmers at the meet with a convincing win in the women’s 100-meter breast at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Gunes, who nearly took down Ruta Meilutyte’s vaunted meet record of 1:06.61 from 2013, won the finale in 1:06.77.

Meet organizers definitely understood just how successful Gunes has been this week as they immediately played Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys after her win.

Sweden’s Sophie Hansson finished second tonight in 1:07.77 with Great Britain’s Katie Matts earning third in 1:07.96.

Russia’s Mariia Astashkina (1:08.12), Japan’s Runa Imai (1:08.13), Russia’s Daria Chikunova (1:09.03), Italy’s Giulia Verona (1:09.12) and Japan’s Yukino Miyasaka (1:09.27) also battled in the finale.

Men’s 50 fly semis

USA’s Michael Andrew nearly cracked the meet record in the men’s 50-meter fly semis at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Andrew, who already smoked the 50 back earlier in the evening for a win, set himself up for another gold with a 23.66 in semis.

That swim just missed Daniel Bell’s meet record of 23.61 from 2008, but is well off Evgeny Sedov’s World Junior mark of 23.28 from the 2014 Russian Championships in Moscow.

Ukraine’s Andrii Khloptsov qualified second in 23.77 with Russia’s Vladislav Kozlov (23.99) and Daniil Pakhomov (24.04) taking third and fourth.

Spain’s Alberto Lozano (24.12), Croatia’s Bruno Blaskovic (24.25) and Poland’s Michal Chudy (24.25) also secured spots in the finale.

Poland’s Pawel Sendyk, Brazil’s Vinicius Lanza and Australia’s Brayden McCarthy set up an exciting three-way swimoff with matching times of 24.38 for the eighth spot in finals.

Lanza won the swimoff in 24.06, while Sendyk (24.39) and McCarthy (24.41) missed the finals.

Women’s 400 free finals

Australia’s Tamsin Cook clipped the meet record in the women’s 400-meter free at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Cook clocked a 4:06.17 for the gold, edging the 4:06.30 set by Elena Sokolova back in 2008 in Monterrey, Mexico.

That time vaulted Cook from 19th in the world to 12th in the overall world rankings this year.

She’s already the second-fastest 18-and-under behind the phenom Katie Ledecky’s world record of 3:59.13 from Worlds.

USA’s Sierra Schmidt collected silver in a time of 4:07.47 with Italy’s Linda Caponi rounding out the podium with at third-place time of 4:07.73.

Men’s 50 free finals

Australia’s Kyle Chalmers emerged victorious in the men’s 50-meter free at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Chalmers raced his way to a 22.19 in the finale of the splash-and-dash, just missing Luke Percy’s meet record of 22.11 from 2013.

Chalmers, already the second-ranked 18-and-under in the world this year, moved closer to Ziv Kalontatov’s 22.16 from the 2015 European Games with his time tonight.

USA’s Michael Andrew just missed his 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record of 22.34 with a 22.36 for silver.

Italy’s Giovanni Izzo placed third in 22.55 to round out the podium.

Brazil’s Felipe Souza (22.58) and Pedro Spajari (22.59) finished fourth and fifth just off the podium.

Women’s 200 IM finals

Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes grabbed another World Junior record with a win in the women’s 200-meter IM at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Gunes hit the wall in 2:11.03 as she crushed the meet record of 2:12.32 set by Ruta Meilutyte, and cleared her own World Junior mark of 2:11.46 from Worlds. That’s slower than the unratified World Junior mark of 2:10.12 by Zhou Min at the 2014 Chinese Nationals.

Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey placed second in 2:12.37 with Great Britain’s Georgia Coates taking third in 2:12.74.

Men’s 800 free relay finals

Grant Shoults, Maxime Rooney, Sean Grieshop and Grant House turned in a sizzling time of 7:13.76.

That performance smashed the previous record of 7:15.36 set by Great Britain at the 2013 edition of the World Junior Championships with a foursome of Matthew Johnson, Max Litchfield, Caleb Hughes and James Guy.

Australia’s Damian Fyfe, Clyde Lewis, Kyle Chalmers and Joshua Parrish finished second in 7:17.76.
