2012 Chinese Olympian Qiu Yuhan Suspended for Doping, Already Served Suspension
Chinese freestyler Qiu Yuhan tested positive for a diuretic and masking agent known as “hydrochlorothiazide” during an out-of-competition drug test last year, but the Chinese anti-doping agency has only recently announced the positive test — after Qiu has already served a nine-month suspension.
The news was reported in the South China Morning Post, which equated the delaying of the release to Sun Yang’s retroactive suspension from 2014 in which results were vacated but he never actually missed time. It’s not clear if FINA was aware of or approved of the suspension before it was served.
In Qiu’s case, however, she finished second in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 free at China’s Olympic Trials last year, only to not be in Rio for the Olympics. Previously, Qiu competed on China’s 400 free relay as a 14-year-old at the 2012 Olympics in London and won four medals, including two gold, at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
