Passages: William Logue, Long-Time Drexel Swim Coach, Dies at Age 86

Long-time Drexel University swimming coach William Logue passed away Dec. 1 at age 86.

A native of Meyersdale, Pa., Logue coached at a number of aquatic programs in the state, culminating with a 23-year stretch as the swimming and diving coach for Drexel that ended with his retirement in 1991. He compiled an overall career record of 242-56.

Logue coached the men’s team from 1968-91 and was the women’s coach from 1978-84. With the men, he posted three undefeated seasons and five East Coast Conference titles. Logue’s Dragons finished either first or second in the ECC in nine of his last 10 seasons.

As the women’s coach, he won six conference titles, was twice named the ECC Coach of the Year and was awarded the 1979 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Coach of the Year honor.

Logue, who resided in Florida at the time of his passing, was regarded by his family and pupils as a coach who was about action above talk, a “no ‘bout-a-doubt it” worker. He also served as an associate professor of physical education at Drexel and coached football and track at the school. He was inducted to the school’s Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.

Logue graduated from Slippery Rock State College with a degree in physical education in 1955. He competed in the U.S. Olympic diving trials and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Logue earned 10 varsity letters at Slippery Rock, a three-year starter in soccer and two-time place winner at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) track and field championships. He was inducted to the Slippery Rock Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.

While getting his master’s degree at West Chester University, Logue coached football in the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District and coached swimming and diving at Great Valley Swim Club and East Whiteland Swim Club in the Philadelphia suburbs before starting at Drexel.

Mr. Louge was my diving coach at EW swim club in the 80’s. He was always so patient and kind. Great guy!
