Olympic Medalist Brendan Hansen Inducted to Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

Olympic medalist Brendan Hansen was announced this week as a member of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

Hansen, who grew up in Haverford and is a product of Suburban Swim Club, compiled a distinguished career in the pool. A 16-time All-American at the University of Texas and 14-time NCAA champion, he swam at three Olympics. He won gold in the medley relay at each, in 2004, 2008 and 2012. He claimed a silver medal in the men’s 100 breaststroke at the 2004 Olympics in Athens as well as a bronze in the 200 breast. Eight years later, he secured bronze in the 100 breast in London.

Hansen is a 10-time World Champion (six long-course, four short-course) among 13 total World Championships medals. He won five gold medals at the Pan Pacific Championships. He set five world records, two in the 100 breast and three in the 200 breast, as well as six as part of American medley relays.

Hansen has been inducted to the University of Texas Athletics Hall of Honor (2015), the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame (2015) and the International Swimming Hall of Fame (2021).

Among the other inductees in the Class of 2024 are Philadelphia Phillies Chase Utley and Ryan Howard; Flyers player Rod Brind’Amour; NBA player Jameer Nelson; basketball player and coach Cheryl Reeve; basketball coach Paul Westhead; baseball player Eddie Stanky and football coach Andy Talley. The induction ceremony will be Nov. 7.
