Grant Hackett – Inside With Brett Hawke

One of the greatest distance freestylers in history, Grant Hackett recently celebrated his 40th birthday, as highlighted in this Swimming World piece that looked at some of the premier accomplishments in the Australian’s career. Now, Hackett is a guest on the Inside with Brett Hawke Podcast, speaking with the host about a host of topics. Hackett and Hawke were mates on the Australian National Team.

When Hackett arrived on the international scene as a distance phenom, he was under considerable pressure due to Australia’s rich history in those events, especially the 1500 freestyle, where Murray Rose and Kieren Perkins, among others, enjoyed legendary status. But Hackett lived up to the expectations by winning back-to-back Olympic titles in the 1500 free at the 2000 and 2004 Games, with a silver medal added at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Hackett also established himself as one of the world’s elite performers in the 400 freestyle, although his exploits in that event get lost in the shadow of Ian Thorpe, who was a two-time Olympic champ in the event. Hackett’s best showing can be argued to be the 2005 World Championships in Montreal, where he won the 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle, with a silver medal added in the 200 freestyle.

During the interview, Hackett discusses pushing himself beyond his breaking point and the importance of mental toughness, including competing at your best when not in peak form. Specifically, Hackett discusses the 1500 freestyle at the 2004 Olympics, which he won despite racing with a partially collapsed lung. Hawke also asks Hackett about handling some of the personal challenges he has faced outside of the pool, what he learned from these situations and his friendship with Michael Phelps.

Hawke’s podcast has been highly successful, already featuring 37 episodes and interviews with some of the biggest names in the sport. Each of these interviews is available on Hawke’s YouTube page, which can be accessed here.
