TAMU Women Top Houston and Miami, with the Hurricanes Tipping Houston -- February 8, 2005
HOUSTON, TX, February 8. THE ninth-ranked Texas A&M women’s swimming & diving team ended its dual meet season with a pair of wins over Houston and Miami (Fla.) on Saturday afternoon at the CRWC Natatorium on UH’s campus, according to Aggie and Hurricane sources.
The Aggies (9-3) defeated the Cougars 88-38 while topping the Hurricanes 78-46. A&M won 8 of the 15 events contested in their final tune-up before the Big 12 Championships later this month. Miami won 6 of 15, getting a win over Houston, 75-56, to finish with a 7-7 overall record.
Junior Erin Briskie (Dallas) was the big winner for the Aggies on Saturday, capturing a pair of events. Briskie easily won both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke in times of 1:04.80 and 2:18.45.
Sophomore Kara Morelli (Scottsdale, Ariz.), an upset winner on Friday night in the 200 back against No. 4 Texas, earned a win in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.14.
The Aggies earned a sweep in both sprint freestyle events against the Cougars and Hurricanes. Senior Danielle Townsend (Bakersfield, Calif.), a double winner against the Longhorns on Friday night, won the 50 freestyle in 23.74 while freshman Chelsea Helgason (Olympia, Wash.) won the 100 freestyle in 52.19.
A&M opened the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400-yard medley relay. Courtney Patterson (Plano, Texas), Lauren Wikholm (Nipomo, Calif.), Millie Reynolds (San Antonio) and Ewelina Zwierzykowski (Corpus Christi, Texas) got the Aggies off to the quick start by capturing the win in 3:52.06.
Junior Caty Lieb (Brookfield, Wis.) and freshman Jenni Stratton (Portland, Oregon) also earned wins for the Aggies in the 200 backstroke (2:04.40) and the 400 individual medley (4:25.87).
The Aggies will take three weeks to prepare for the Big 12 Championships, which will take place at their home pool in College Station on Feb. 23-26.
Miami will now get ready for their inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference Championships that will begin February 16th at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga. The women’s competition will take part from Feb. 16th through the 19th, while the men’s diving squad will compete Feb. 23-26.
