Men's NCAAs, Day 2 Prelims: Crocker Blazes a World Record 49.77 100 meter Fly -- March 26, 2004

By Phillip Whitten

EAST MEADOW, New York, March 26. A world record by Ian Crocker highlighted this afternoon’s prelims. It was the fourth global mark set through the halfway point of the men’s NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, being held in East Meadow, NY.

Crocker blazed the 100m fly in 49.77 seconds, becoming the first swimmer to crash through the 50-second barrier. But his was not the only fast swim at prelim on Day 2 of this very fast meet.

Here’s how it came down this afternoon…

200 meter medley relay
Stanford got the ball rolling with an American record in the 200m medley relay, as the team of Peter Marshall, Gary Marshall, Matt McDonald and Ben Wildman-Tobriner touched in 1:35.77. But the Cardinal is far from having clinched the race. Right behind Stanford is Auburn, Texas, cal and Arizona, any one of which could take all the marbles.

100 meter butterfly
After last night, almost everyone was expecting Ian Crocker to go for the 100 meter fly record…tonight. But no one was expecting it in prelims. Well, almost no one.

“Coach, did you expect this -- a world record?” I asked Eddie Reese, Crocker’s coach.

“Yup,” he answered.

“No, I mean, did you expect it in prelims?” I pressed.

“Yup,” came the reply.

Crocker’s 49.77 (split: 23.22) destroyed Michael Cavic’s world record of 50.02 set last December at the European Short Course Championships. Cavic, still feeling the effects of the flu, managed to qualify seventh in 52.30.

Posting the #2 time this afternoon was Cal’s Duje Draganja (51.57). Fred Bousquet of Auburn was third (51.72).

A cut: 52.43; B cut: 53.13.
