Phelps’ 49.19 was National Age Group Record

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, August 7. HE claims he's not a sprinter — and he's not.

But, as a footnote to last night's events, Michael Phelps' winning 49.19 second effort in the 100 meter free was a national age group (NAG) record for boys 17-18.

The old mark of 49.52 was set by Joe Hudepohl in 1992.

That makes nonsprinter Michael Phelps the fastest 18 year-old sprinter in the history of US swimming.
