NCAA Div. I Men: #1 Stanford Rips Arizona, 160-66

TUCSON, ARIZ., January 24. TOP-ranked Stanford's men's swimming and diving team had no trouble defeating Arizona in the Cardinal's Pac-10 opener this aftrnoon.

Stanford swamped the No. 14 Wildcats, 160-66, while improving to 5-0, 1-0 Pac-10. The Cardinal won 11 of 14 swimming events and one of two diving events on the day, with Michael Bruce doubling in the 100-200 breast, Matt Sorlein following suit in the 500-1000 frees and defending NCAA 200 back-200 IM champ Markus Rogan winning the 100 back. Rogan also won the 400 IM although he was swimmting exhibition.

Arizona had a sterling triple from freshman sprinter-flyer Lyndon Ferns, who won the 50-100 frees (20.61, 45.25) – 100 fly (49.32) and who just joined the Wildcat program days ago at mid-semester.

The Cardinal opened the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Randall Bal, Bruce, Peter Marshall and Bobby O'Bryan turned in a winning time of 1:29.35 – the fastest by a Stanford relay team this year.

Stanford followed with a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 free as Sorlien took top honors (9:08.56). with Michael McLean second (9:25.78) and Eric DiIulio third. John Waters then took the the 200 free (1:38.51) with teammate Dan Trupin third (1:39.25). Another 1-2-3 finish came next in the 100 back, Rogan winning
(49.28) and Bal runner-up (50.05).

From that point the handwriting was on the wall and Stanford cruised the balance of the meet. Bruce, defending Pac-10 champ in both breststrokes, won handily (55.83-2:00.04) with Cardinal Rick Eddy second in the 100 (57.39). Sophomore Jayme Cramer won 200 fly (1:46.87); O'Bryan was second in the 50 free and Waters took third in the 100 free (46.29).

The Cardinal also got a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 back as Dan Westcott led the way with his 1:47.86. Sorlien, the 500-1000 free champ, was a surprise second (1:48.01) and Tobias Oriwol — a Canadian World Championship team member — was third (1:51.01). Bruce and Pat Fowler went 1-2 in the 200 breast to further enhance the Cardinal adevantage on the scoreboard and Waters was second in the 500 with Michael McLean third.

In diving action, Gavin Olmstead (181.60) and Adam Peterson (180.55) finished second and third respectively in the one-meter event. Olmstead won the three-meter event with a score of 210.15. Peterson placed fourth (181.15).

Stanford is back in action tomorrow (Jan. 25), facing No. 13 Arizona State in Tempe.
