Miki, Yamada Set National Records on Day 3 of Japanese Nationals -- June 13, 2002

TOKYO, June 13. TWO national records were shattered today on the third day of competition of the Japanese National Championship and Trials for the Pan Pacific Games and Asian Games. The meet is being held at Tatsumi International Pool in Tokyo.

Jiro Miki set a Japanese and Asian record in winning the men's 200m IM in a blistering 2:01.10. Miki pulled away during the breaststroke leg to edge Takahiro Mori, who finished in a speedy 2:01.64. Miki's time ranks third globally in 2002, behind the Italian pair of Massi Rosolino and Alessio Boggiatto.

Sachiko Yamada set the second national record of the day, clocking 16:17.77 to win the womn's 1500 meters freestyle, almost 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Ai Shibata. On Day One, Yamada won the 400 free in 4:11.84. Earlier this spring, Yamada broke the world short course record at 800 meters.

Yamada's time ranks her third globally in 2002, behind the USA's Diana Munz and China's Chen Hua. It was Chen's record Yamada broke in the short course 800.

Tomoko Hagiwara, who yesterday set a national record in the 200m backstroke with a world-leading time of 2:10.04, breezed to a win in the 200 IM today in 2:13.65. Takeshi Matsuda took the men's 800 free in 8:01.24.
