NCAA Division I, Top 25 Times Updated -- January 21, 2002
In this issue of the Speedo/CSCAA Top 25 listings, we feature many competitions from the past couple of weeks as swimmers began in earnest to grab qualifying spots for the NCAA Championships in March.
Stanford's Peter Marshall posted the only nation-leading individual time among the men with his 46.92 in the 100 yard back at the Stanford-Michigan dual meet Jan. 11-12. A non-scoring exhibition was held on the 11th; the scoring meet took place the next day. Marshall also placed eighth on the list in the 200 back (1:45.62).
One of the more exciting events was the 1000 free; times from that event placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively, on the list. Michigan's Brendan Neligan won the event (9:00.41), followed by teammate Andrew Hurd (9:01.97) and Stanford's Matt Sorlien (9:02.19).
At the Dallas Morning News Classic last weekend, California's Anthony Ervin turned in the second-fastest time in the nation in the 50 free (19.46) and third in the 100 free (43.29); teammate Duge Draganja has the second spot with his 43.21 and is tied for sixth in the 50 (20.09). Other top-ten performances were turned in by SMU's Jakob Andersen (200 back, 1:45.85, tenth); Tennessee's Jeremy McDonnell (100 breast, 54.82, fifth) and Andrew Bree (200 breast, 1:59.17, sixth); Cal's Alex Lim (200 fly, 1:46.16, sixth); and Auburn's Kevin Clements (200 IM, 1:47.57, second) and Mark Gangloff (200 IM, 1:48.64, seventh).
There were plenty of strong performances among the women as well. Virginia's Cara Lane and Amy Baly went 1-2 in the 1000 free against North Carolina on the 19th and have the fourth- and seventh-fastest times this year as a result (Lane, 9:49.70; Baly, 9:51.25). At the Georgia-SMU meet the same day, SMU's Flavia Rigamonti turned in the second-fastest time this season in the 1650 free (16:17.07). Indiana's Susan Woessner has the fourth best time in the 100 back (54.46). Texas A&M's Clara Ho has the No. 9 spot in the 200 fly (1:59.17).
The next Speedo/CSCAA Top 25 Times list will be published on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Please e-mail all results/corrections to JudyJ@swiminfo.com, or fax them to 928-284-2477.
