USC Performs Well Under Coach Salo

LOS ANGELES, California, October 14. SOPHOMORE Amanda Weir, in her first competition as a Trojan, posted three NCAA automatic qualifying times to lead the USC women's swimming team to dual-meet wins over Oregon State and Cal State Northridge on Saturday (Oct. 14) at USC McDonald's Swim Stadium.

The Women of Troy (2-0) defeated the Beavers, 63-32, and beat the Matadors, 86-9, providing first-year head coach Dave Salo his first wins as USC head coach.

Weir posted wins in the 50y (22.60), 100y (48.76) and 200y free (1:46.74), breezing to victories in each. Weir, a 2004 U.S. Olympian and one of the top sprinters in the country, competed for Georgia in 2005.

Senior Kalyn Keller won the 1000y free (9:48.62) while sophomore Rachael Waller took the 500y free (4:57.75). Neither was challenged. Sophomore Missy McIntyre (1:02.49, NCAA consideration) also edged teammate Rebecca Soni in the 100y breast.

Oregon State's Saori Haruguchi won the 400y IM (4:23.16, NCAA consideration) as well as the 100y back (56.42). Beaver Kayla Rawlings won the 100y fly in 56.56, a hair ahead of Trojan junior Emily Goetsch (56.57).

Troy won the 200y medley relay while Oregon State won the 400y free relay.

Seniors Viktor Bodrogi and Larsen Jensen each won twice to lead the men's swimming team to an easy win over Cal State Northridge, 86-9.

Jensen's wins came in the 500y (4:34.07) and 1000y free (9:15.07) while Bodrogi took the 200y back (1:48.46) and the 200y fly (1:48.74), the latter win leading a first through fourth finish for the Trojans.

Senior Gergely Meszaros won the 200y free (1:43.02), edging teammate Bryce Elser (1:43.12). Senior Richard Gosper won the 50y free (20.60), sophomore Vanni Mangoni won the 400y IM (3:58.96), senior Sean Sussex won the 100y free (45.17) and senior Mihaly Flaskay won the 200y breast (2:03.26). Flaskay out-touched senior teammate Joon Youm (2:03.31).
