Xavier Downs Valpo, 157-123 Women/154-103 Men

VALPARAISO, Indiana, October 20. THE Xavier University swimming team defeated host Valparaiso University in dual meet Friday evening. The men won their meet 154-103, while the women won by a 157-123 count. Both teams return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. versus Bowling Green and Cincinnati at UC's new Keating Aquatics Center.

Both the men and women started strong, taking first place in both 200 Medley Relays. The women's team of Elaina Suba, Krystel Kooyman, Jill Winhusen and Jill Cooke won in a time of 1:53.58. The men's team of Jake Burke, Matt Marcus, Dave Janszen and Matt Krouse finished in 1:40.08.

Suba enjoyed a solid meet as won three events for Xavier. Along with the Medley Relay, she took gold in the 100 Back (1:01.31) and 200 Back (2:16.54). The women's 1,000 Free went to the Musketeers as Kelsey Burns (11:16.12) and Dana Hunter (11:26.70) took the top two places.

Krouse highlighted the men's side as he was part of both relays which took the top spots and also won the 200 Back. He teamed with Janszen, Mark Febus and Patrick McGrath to win the 200 Free Relay in a time of 1:30.16. In the 200 Back, he paced the field in a time of 54.02. Febus was the top finisher in the 50 Free, edging the field in a time of 22.86.

Other first-place finishers for Xavier were Martha Cutter-Wilson (100 Breast), Nico Lilly (200 Fly), Jake Burke (100 Free), Michael Hafertepe (200 Back), Joe Conklin (200 Breast), Kelsey Burns (200 Breast) and Mary Catherine Mahon (500 Free).
