Women’s Div. I NCAA Champs, Day One Prelims: Coverage As It Happens: Joyce Sets American, NCAA Mark; Keller, Coventry Take NCAA Standards

By Phillip Whitten

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 18. The Women’s NCAA Division I prelims are underway here in College Station, and we’re going to give you blow-by-blow, real-time updates on each event.

This meet is being swum short course meters and in the deep, beautifully-designed Aggie pool, fast times are expected.

Here we go…

200 meter medley relay
Indiana wins heat 1 in 1:41.23.

In heat 2, Georgia freshman Kara Lynn Joyce leads off in 24.70, breaking the NCAA record of 24.80 set four years ago by Georgia’s Courtney Shealey, who went on to make the 2000 Olympic team. Not a bad NCAA debut! Georgia wins the heat in 1:38.52, lowering the NCAA mark of 1:40.18 by Cal in 2000 and the American/US Open mark of 1:39.59 by Team Stars and Stripes from 2001.

All eyes are on Cal’s Natalie Coughlin leading off for Cal in the final heat. Nat touches in 24.72, just missing Kara Lynn’s new mark, but Auburn senior Becky Short is a tad faster – 24.69 – and claims the American record. Auburn wins the heat in 1:38.58.

400 meter medley relay
This is an event where we could see an American – and possibly a world – record tonight.

Heat 1. Arizona wins in a formidable 3:59.81 with Whitney Myers’ 57.57 for the fly split sparking the Cats. Auburn is second in 4:02.67.

Heat 2. Penn State’s Sarah Haupt splits 59.35 to take the lead after the backstroke. Tara Kirk’s 1:05.87 pulls Stanford into second, but the Nittany Lions still have a body length lead. PSU holds onto a half-body length lead at the final exchange, as Dana Kirk splits 57.96 for the Cardinal. Great battle in the final leg as Stanford wins in 4:01.13 to Penn State’s 4:01. 48.

Heat 3. Georgia, which holds the American and NCAA mark is in lane 4, the top qualifier. The Dawgs’ Neka Mabry gives Georgia the lead in 1:00.05. A 1:06.60 breast split by Sarah Poewe extends Georgia’s lead. Mary Descenza splits 57.09 for the fly, but Cal’s Coughlin goes 56.86 to bring the Bears into contention. Joyce anchors for Georgia, in a measured 54.67 as the Dawgs touch in the top qualifying time, 3:58.41.

It takes 4:04.38 to make the A final, 4:08.87 to make B.
