In this Swimming World exchange, University of Texas Men’s Swimming Coach – Eddie Reese – explains why there will not be a sub 1:30 200 yard freestyle at the 2017 NCAA Men’s DI Swimming Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Q – Swimming World (SW): As you may know, Swimming World has written that the 1:30 barrier in the 200 free is going down this weekend.

A – Eddie Reese (ER): I don’t know about that. They put in these big touch pads so it’s a real rough. Even though we are going real fast, it is a real rough pool.

SW: So you think that will factor in?

ER: Without a doubt, it will. For the guys who are underwater more, the backstrokers even the IMers, it’s not that bad. It’s terrible for the 200 freestylers.

SW: You are not that optimistic.

ER: Not at all.

SW: Are these pads different?

ER: They hide the gutter, but they are killing us with the waves.

SW: And they did at Georgia Tech too? (Site of the 2016 NCAA meet).

ER: Yup. I couldn’t believe that.

SW: So why?

ER: I don’t know. They sold them the (high) pads. They want to use them. I don’t know. I will personally buy pads that are lower, send them over and let them use them. I’ll give them to them. You don’t go all year and then come into a pool that looks like the North Atlantic.

Maybe it could happen… hard to doubt Eddie’s take on it, though. The guy sees everything! Best chance if one of the big guns inadvertently qualifies for an outside lane.

If these walls are so bad why are they used at the Olympics, US Olympic Trials, Duel in the Pool, Arena Pro Swim Series, ALL USA Swimming Nationals? Does not seem to be an issue at those meets!
