IRVINE, California, August 8. LONG before Brendan McHugh stepped up to swim the 50 breaststroke prelims at the USA Swimming nationals, he knew he was going to break Kevin Steel’s U.S. Open record. In this video interview, the 24-year-old talked about the practice swim he did a couple of days earlier that clued him in to how fast he would swim today.

McHugh also discussed his resurgence in the sport since the 2012 Olympic Trials, including adding 10 pounds to his frame and being smarter about life outside the pool.
