Texas Men Sweep Big 12 Honors

AUSTIN, Tex, December 18. THE University of Texas men's swimming and diving team swept the Big 12 Conference honors for the month of December as senior Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) was named the Swimmer of the Month and junior Jonathan Linette (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was selected as the league's Diver of the Month.

Crocker, the world record-holder in the 100-meter butterfly and a three-time NCAA champion in the 100-yard butterfly, became the first Longhorn to be selected as the Big 12 Conference Swimmer of the Month this season. At the Texas Invitational, Crocker earned the right to go for his fourth consecutive title in the 100 butterfly after automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a time of 52.94 in the 100-meter butterfly. Crocker also anchored the 400-meter medley relay that posted a first-place finish with a mark of 3:48.80 at the non-scored meet.

In diving, Linette became the second Texas diver in as many months to be selected the Big 12 Conference Diver of the Month. At the Texas Invitational, Linette posted the top scores on the three-meter and the platform, duplicating the feat he accomplished last year at the Big 12 Conference Championships en route to being named the league's Diver of the Year in 2003. Linette posted scores of 561.35 on the three-meter and 547.10 on the platform at the Texas Invitational.

In November, sophomore Mark Shattuck (Derby, United Kingdom) was honored as the Big 12 Conference Diver of the Month for the first time in his career after leading second-ranked Texas to a 227-221 victory over sixth-ranked Michigan at Canham Natatorium on Nov. 15. Shattuck's victories on the one- and three-meter springboard were critical in Texas' come-from-behind victory as the Longhorns trailed 207-186 heading into the final three events. After posting a first-place finish on the one-meter with a score of 358.50, Shattuck added a victorious score of 359.10 on the three-meter in one of the final competitions of the meet.
