Streamlined News: Franklin in HS Meet; Tickets Open for Worlds; Polo Coaches Honored

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 9. MISSY Franklin took the first step to qualifying for the Colorado state meet with four races yesterday in a dual meet against Highlands Ranch. Franklin swam the 200 IM and 500 free, and also led off the Regis Jesuit's 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Franklin is likely to swim the 200 free and 100 back before the state meet to qualify to swim those events at the state meet, but Franklin has not made public what events she'll swim at the state meet next month. She broke the independent national high school records in the 200 free and 100 back at last year's state meet, as well as the 100 free leading off her school's 400 free relay.

If you're interested in attending the FINA world championships this summer as a spectator, the event organizers opened up ticket sales to the general public yesterday. Obviously, pool swimming will be the high-demand sport in Barcelona, but the addition of high diving to the program could make that event popular as well. Anyone who watched the platform diving events at the 1992 Olympics will remember the spectacular view the venue provided, with the backdrop of the city framing divers as they leapt from the 10-meter platform. If you're going to Barcelona, that's not a sight to be missed. If you're interested in purchasing tickets, you should go to bcn2013.com/en/tickets as soon as possible to get the best seats.

Adam Krikorian and Alex Rodriguez were named the USA water polo elite coaches of the year on Wednesday in advance of the annual awards banquet to be held next week. Krikorian was the head coach of the women's Olympic team that won the gold medal in London, while Rodriguez is the men's water polo head coach at Pomona-Spitzer College, which had a very rough start with 11 straight losses at the beginning of the season but rebounded with 16 wins to cap off the season. The two coaches and nearly a dozen other officials will be honored at a ceremony on January 19.
