Streamlined News: Diana Nyad Ends Swim; Cesar Cielo Sprints in Brazil; No Violations for Phelps Photo Leak

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 21. DIANA Nyad has ended her quest to swim the 103 miles from Florida to Cuba, with weather and constant jellyfish stings keeping her from her goal. Nyad was pulled from the water around 1 a.m. Eastern time this morning, and after much deliberation from her team, decided to end the swim. This was her fourth attempt to complete the swim. Her first try was in 1978, and today, she missed out on reaching the Florida coast on her 63rd birthday.

Cesar Cielo is still swimming fast, this time at the Brazilian short course championships. Cielo blasted a 20.81 in the 50 free, not too far off the 20.51 he swam in December 2010 to win the short course world title. Cielo is likely to defend that championship this December in Turkey.

Late yesterday the United States Olympic Committee responded to media reports that Michael Phelps was in danger of losing his Olympic medals because a leaked photo from a Louis Vuitton ad went public before the end of the Rule 40 timeline. Rule 40 policy dictated that no athlete or coach could distribute an ad featuring themselves between July 18 and August 15 that wasn't from an official Olympic sponsor. The USOC said there was “no issue from us” regarding the release of the photo, and that all the guidelines regarding the start of the ad campaign were within the rules.
