San Diego State Concludes Dual Season With Victory

SAN DIEGO, California, February 3. THE San Diego State women' swimming and diving team completed its 2006-07 regular season with a 177-123 victory over the University of San Diego Saturday afternoon at the Toreros' USD Sports Center Pool. The win gives the Aztecs a final record of 9-8 as they record their most dual meet wins in a season since the 2001-02 campaign.

Among the top SDSU performances on the day was that of freshman diver Caitlin Atkinson, who set school records in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Her score of 273.13 in the one-meter broke her own record of 268.59 set in mid-December at the UNLV Invitational. It also confirmed her status as a Zone E qualifier as she will advance later this month to the next step in qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Atkinson also recorded a score of 265.50 in the three-meter, barely eclipsing the Aztec record of 265.20 set by teammate Megan Flanagan last November in the dual meet at North Texas.

On the day, SDSU's divers took five of the top six spots in the one-meter and first through fifth in the three-meter, capturing 37 of the possible 38 points for their team. During that run, sophomore Kathleen Heuring set a personal best in the one-meter with a score of 253.20, good for second in the event.

Junior Katie Smith was a triple winner for San Diego State, capturing first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (59.87), 200 backstroke (2:08.54) and 200 individual medley (2:12.88). She also swam the leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay that finished second.

Brittany Daly won a pair of events for the Aztecs. For the second week in a row, she swept the 500 (5:07.69) and 1000 freestyle (10:23.96) races. Her time in the latter event was a personal season best for the junior from Bay Shore, N.Y.

Two other San Diego State swimmers also won an individual races. Kimberlee Frith took first in the 100 free (53.66) while Jessica Morrill was the victor in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.73). That twosome also recorded second-place finishes in the 200 free and 100 breaststroke respectively.
The Aztecs will now have just over two weeks to prepare for the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships to be held Feb. 21-24 in Oklahoma City.
