Peter Kropp Breaks ACC Record in 100 Breast

CHAPEL HILL − Duke’s Peter Kropp took down the ACC record in the men’s 100 breast during prelims of the Nike Cup Invitational. Held at Koury Natatorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Kropp blasted a 52.02 to chop a half second off the previous conference mark of 52.59 set by Zach Stephens earlier this spring.

Kropp, a sophomore from Los Angeles, qualified first for tonight’s final by two seconds over Air Force’s Michael Barnosky, and he posted the fastest time in the country this season. The previous top mark had been a 53.22 from Michigan’s Richard Funk. The time is an automatic qualifying mark for this spring’s NCAA Championships, and it would have tied with Cal’s Chuck Katis for fourth in last year’s NCAA final. Kropp, meanwhile, fell short of the cut for NCAAs after taking fourth at the ACC Championships in a then-personal best time of 53.34. The cut fell at 53.23.

Kropp is the only Duke swimmer to hold an ACC record, although recent Duke grads Nick McCrory and Abby Johnston hold a combined five diving marks. Kropp joins good company in holding the 100 breast record; prior to Stephens breaking the mark this past February, the mark belonged to Ed Moses for 14 years. Moses clocked a 52.60 in 2000 prior to winning an Olympic silver medal in the 100 breast that summer.

I believe old ACC record was 52.59 by Notre Dame’s Zach Stephens from last February’s ACCs Greensboro, which in turn broke Moses’ 52.60 from Y2K ACCs Chapel Hill.

Two years after his medal-winning swim Sydney Moses swam fastest 100 breast all-time by an ACC athlete — 52.02 (exh.) for the Cavs during their dual-meet w/Tennessee in Charlottesville that January.
