Pac-12 Friday Recap: Cal Sweeps Arizona; Stanford Sweeps Arizona State

The No. 6 Cal women’s swimming & diving team kicked off a two-day road trip with a 181-119 win at Arizona on Friday.

The Golden Bears won 11 of the 16 events.

Freshman Abbey Weitzeil swept the 50 (22.52) and 100 freestyle (49.90) events, while sophomore Amy Bilquist captured the 100 (53.58) and 200 backstroke (1:57.73), and junior Noemie Thomas claimed the 100 (53.39) and 200 butterfly (1:59.44). Bilquist remained undefeated in the 100 and 200 backstroke in dual-meet competition this season, which also is true for Thomas in both butterfly races and Weitzeil in the 50 free.

The Golden Bears picked up one victory each from senior Marina Garcia in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.33), senior Celina Li in the 200 individual medley (2:01.88) and sophomore Phoebe LaMay on the 3-meter springboard (277.2 points).

Cal won four of the first eight races, then took seven of the last eight events, including a 1-2-3 finish by Weitzeil, senior Kristen Vredeveld (50.24) and senior Farida Osman (50.44) in the 100 free.

Bilquist, Weitzeil, Thomas and Osman won the 200 medley relay (1:38.17).

Arizona freshman Hannah Cox outdueled California’s Katie McLaughlin to win the 200 free by five-hundredths of a second, touching in 1:49.43. The freshman later dominated the 500 free, winning by a body length with 4:52.78.

Senior diver Sally Hackett won the 1-meter with a score of 295.80. She later placed second in the 3-meter with 263.70. Freshman Kennedy Lohman took first in the 100 breast, her best event, with 1:03.49. Junior Tjasa Oder won the 1,000 free with a time of 10:04.42. Annie Ochitwa (54.85) and Taylor Garcia (55.14) finished behind Bilquist in a battle NCAA qualifiers in the event.

In the men’s meet, No. 1 Cal won 161-113.

The team of Ryan Murphy, Connor Hoppe, Justin Lynch and Pawel Sendyk stopped the clock in 1:27.67 to win the 200-yard medley relay and beat teammates Mike Thomas, Carson Sand, Matthew Josa and Michael Jensen, who finished second.

Ryan Kao won the 1,000 free in 9:23.76 is a season-best for the junior. Josa won the 100 backstroke (48.97).

Sophomore Andrew Seliskar picked up his first win of the day with a time of 1:45.67 in the 200 butterfly and returned to the pool near the end of the meet to swim the 200 IM in a top time of 1:47.67.

Arizona junior Nick Thorne earned a second-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.60, out-touching Cal’s Jack Xie by seven-hundredths of a second.

Stanford tops Arizona State

Stanford freshman Katie Drabot, sophomore Ella Eastin, junior Lindsey Engel and junior Ally Howe each won multiples races as Stanford women’s swimming & diving earned a 178-113 win over Arizona State on Friday afternoon in the rain as the Cardinal remained undefeated.

Stanford won every event at the meet, and Drabot bookended the individual events with a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the top time in the 200 individual medley. Her collegiate-best finish of 9:45.38 marked her second career victory in the 1,000 free, and she was the first to touch the wall as an exhibition swimmer in the IM with a time of 2:00.53.

Howe swept the 100 and 200 butterfly. She earned her first victory with a finish of 1:59.70 in the 200, and then had the top time in the 100 at 54.84.

Katie Ledecky won the 200 freestyle (1:44.55).

In the men’s meet, No. 8 Stanford opened Pac-12 Conference play with a 159-141 win against Arizona State on Friday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

Stanford’s 200-yard medley relay team of Ryan Dudzinski, Matt Anderson, Andrew Liang and Sam Perry (1:28.34) led off the meet with a tie for first place. In the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Grant Shoults (1:37.37) was first.

The Arizona State 200 medley relay – Andrew Porter, Christian Lorenz, Tadas Duskinas and Richard Bohus — tied Stanford, while Bohus, Patrick Park, Duskinas and Cameron Craig captured a victory in the 400-free relay.

Washington State defeats Oregon State

The Washington State swim team opened 2017 with a convincing 170-87 victory over Oregon State

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead, taking the top two spots in the 400 medley relay. WSU’s team of Hannah Bruggman, Angela Mavrantza, Anna Brolin and Haley Rose Love took first with a time of 3:50.08.

Addisynn Bursch added first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.41), 100 free (51.95) and in the 200 IM (2:03.75). Junior Rachel Thompson finished first the 200 free in 1:53.51. Senior Jessica Marston took home her first win of the season with a 10:40.47 in the 1,000 free. Mavrantza, a freshman, notched her team-leading fifth and sixth wins — in the 100 breast (1:04.61) and the 200 breast (2:20.11).

Oregon State’s Felecia Anderson took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.92 and finished second in the 200-yard with a touch of 2:04.41.
