Oregon 1-4A High School State Championships

GRESHAM, Oregon, February 29. OREGON's small-school division (1-4A) came up big, setting 13 class records and turning in times similar to those at Oregon's 5A Championships.

Team Scores
Marist squeaked by Henley in the women's competition, winning by a score of 53-48. Cottage Grove finished up third with 36.5 points.

Cottage Grove had more decisive victory on the men's side, tallying 67 points. Sweet Home finished second with 54 points while Tillamook finished third with 35 points.

Women's Individual Results
Henley put up first-place times in two of the three relay events. Kristin McBride, Melinda Duran, Melanie Johnson and Stephanie North gave Henley a win in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:43.35. They broke the former 1-4A record (1:45.96) in the process, which was set by Cottage Grove last year. The 400 freestyle relay grouping of McBride, Duran, Johnson and North battled Marist for first in the event, and the Henley contingent won with a time of 3:46.41.

North re-etched her name in the Oregon 1-4A record book twice, winning the 50 and the 100 in record times. Her 24.06 50 freestyle reset her 2007 standard of 24.44 while her 52.74 100 freestyle reset her 2007 mark of 53.29.

Rachel Heaney from North Bend paced her competition in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, winning each in times of 1:57.35 and 5:11.71, respectively.

Cascade's Crystal Kibby outswam the field in the 200 IM, winning in a 1-4A-record time of 2:07.99. Kibby lowered her 2007 record of 2:08.08 with the swim. Kibby reset another record in the 100 breaststroke when she clocked a 1:06.91 in the preliminary heats. She won in finals with a 1:07.00 time.

Taft's Aly Viles accounted for the remaining 1-4A record-breaking performance as she stopped the clock at 58.15 in the 100 butterfly, bettering Heaney's 59.71 standard, which she set last year.

Men's Individual Results
Cottage Grove set 1-4A records in each of its two relay wins. Cottage Grove's 200 medley relay team of David Elligott, Colby Fix-Carter, Cameron Barton and Zachary Taylor combined for a 1:42.33 time, crushing the former class record set by Cottage Grove last year (1:46.57). Fix-Carter, Barton, Jon Berg and Taylor launched a 3:20.22 effort in the 400 freestyle relay, taking down Cottage Grove's 2007 record of 3:23.87 in the event.

Tillamook's relay of Tim Teran, Noah Boring, Miguel Nieves and Daniel Werner took top honors in the 200 freestyle relay, breaking Cottage Grove's 2007 1-4A record of 1:33.94 with a time of 1:31.88.

Taylor added to his two relay golds with two individual event wins in the freestyle sprint events. Taylor took the 50 freestyle title with a 22.15 time, resetting his 2007 1-4A mark of 22.63. He battled with the former record holder in the 100 freestyle, Kieran Schaefer of Sweet Home, and dethroned Schaefer in the event with a time of 47.72. Schafer set the former 1-4A record of 49.40 last year.

Jayce Calhoon of Sweet Home snared two individual event triumphs as well. Calhoon took first in the 500 freestyle with a 4:51.92 time, resetting his 2007 1-4A mark of 4:57.15. Calhoon snatched up his second gold medal in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in 54.67.

Blanchet's Andy Ottolia finished first in each individual event he swam as well, taking first in the 200 IM (1:59.28) and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.33). Ottolia's 1:59.28 time in the IM reset his 2007 1-4A record of 1:59.81.

Matt Johnson of North Bend held off Schaefer in the 200 freestyle, taking the event in 1:45.65. Schaefer set the former mark of 1:49.57 last year. Johnson also finished third in the 100 backstroke (55.11).
