Omaha Marian, Omaha Creighton Prep Win Women’s, Men’s Competition at Nebraska State Championships

LINCOLN, Nebraska, March 13. OMAHA Marian repeated as state champions for the women and the Omaha Creighton Prep men dethroned defending champion Omaha Westside at the 2007 Nebraska State Championship.

Team Scores

Omaha Marian captured the state championship on the women's side of the competition with a 220 point effort. Second-place Omaha Duchesne Academy placed close behind with 207 points while Omaha Westside scored 181 points and settled for third.

Omaha Creighton Prep seized the state title from Omaha Westside due in part to a tie for first in the 200 medley relay. Had Omaha Westside not shared first place, it would have won the state title. However, Omaha Creighton Prep prevailed in the end with a meet-high 247 points. Omaha Westside stood five points back in second place with 242 points while third-place Lincoln East scored 203 points.

Women's Individual Results

Junior Kelly Kunkel led the way for Omaha Marian. Kunkel placed first in both the 200 freestyle (1:52.98) and the 100 freestyle (52.88).

Millard West freshman Shannon Guy easily conquered the 100 butterfly with a 56.20 time. Guy's time also broke the former state record time of 56.34. Miranda Shald of Millard North set the former standard of 56.34 in 2000. Guy took the 100 breaststroke title later on in the meet with a final time of 1:06.60.

Omaha Westside placed first in two relays. Omaha Westside's foursome of Trevor Woods, Christopher Cassling, Spenser Lauver and Zachary Hensley caught Omaha Creighton Prep on the last 50 en route to sharing the state title. The quartet of Woods, Hensley, Ryan Peetz and Spenser Lauver gained ground on the final heat with each leg of the relay, winning the event in 3:13.78.

Lauver captured two individual titles for Omaha Westside with victories in the 200 freestyle (1:40.99) and the 100 butterfly (51.48). Lauver also captured first-place honors in both events in the 2006 championship meet.
