No. 3 California Women Defeat No. 23 Arizona State, 194-99

TEMPE, Arizona, January 12. FOURTH-ranked California won 13 of 16 events and defeated No. 23 Arizona State, 194-99, in a dual meet held on Friday afternoon at the Sun Devils' Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Golden Bears junior Emily Silver won the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles against Arizona State.

Cal, which was coming off a recent training trip to Hawai'i, now has a 15-10-1 record in its all-time series with the Sun Devils.

"It was a solid team performance, and I am very pleased especially just coming back from the training trip and considering the amount of travel we've done the last week and a half," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "Emily Silver obviously did a really nice job. Dana Vollmer did a great job."

Silver won the 50 free in a time of 23.20 (NCAA B), the 100 free in a time of 50.30 (NCAA B) and the 200 free in a time of 1:49.84 (NCAA B). She also swam the third leg of Cal's winning 200-free relay, which clocked a 1:32.55 (NCAA B). Teammates Jessica Hardy, Sherry Tsai and Vollmer, the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Month for December, joined Silver in the relay.

Cal sophomore Lauren Boyle won the 1000 free in 10:02.91, with Vollmer, a sophomore swimming her first 1000 of the season, taking third in 10:22.36. Vollmer also won the 100 fly in 54:50 (NCAA B)

Tsai, a senior, Hardy, a sophomore, Vollmer and Erin Reilly, a senior, comprised Cal's winning 200-medley relay, which had a time of 1:42.01 (NCAA B). Hardy won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.73 (NCAA B) and fellow Cal sophomore Lauren Rogers won the 200 back in 2:00.98 (NCAA B).

Bears junior Rachel Ridgeway won the 200 butterfly in 2:03.01.

Three freshmen won events for Cal, as Alexandra Ellis took the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.35 (NCAA B), Blake Hayter won the 500 free in 4:54.08 and Heather White captured the 400-individual medley in 4:21.90 (NCAA B).

In the only swimming event that Cal didn't win, Tsai raced to a 55.86 to finish second behind ASU's Caitlin Andrew (55.46).
