NCAA Div. I Women: Florida Gators Bite LSU

GAINEVLE, Fla., Oct. 11. HIGHLIGHTED by two automatic NCAA qualifying times, the University of Florida women's swimming team defeated LSU 140-96 Friday afternoon at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.

"We are very pleased with the way the women swam today, it was a great starting point," Head Swimming Coach Gregg Troy said.

The Gators won all nine scored events and finished first in four exhibition races to claim their ninth all-time victory over the Tigers. In the 1,650-yard freestyle, junior Sara McLarty (Deland, Fla.) and sophomore Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships finishing first and second with times of 16:07.25 and 16:25.07, respectively. Senior Anna Chapman (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and freshman Jamie Tannhauser (Seattle, Wash.) followed McLarty and Green, finishing third and fourth to sweep the event.

Three freshmen won their first collegiate races in their first meet as Gators. Marietta Uhle (St. Ingbert, Germany) won two events, including the 100- and 200-yard freestyle in times of 52.16 and 1:50.69.

Mandy Huff (Gold Hill, N.C.) won the 50-yard freestyle (24.12) and Jamie Reid (Orlando, Fla.) finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.25).

The 400-yard medley relay team consisting of Reid, junior Cerian Gibbes (Trinidad), Huff and senior Diane Tennison (Lafayette, La.) also won with a time of 3:49.98. Sophomore Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:02.17.

The divers also swept the one- and three-meter springboard events. Junior Nicole Bolt (Orlando, Fla.) won both events, scoring 266.10 on the one-meter springboard and 284.55 on the three-meter springboard. Freshman Jessica Ranieri (Huntington Valley, Pa.) placed second on the one-meter (263.10) and third on the three-meter (280.72).

Florida will host a dual meet against Indian River Community College, Friday October 18 at 3 p.m.
