COLUMBUS, OH, January 28. THE No. 25 Golden Gopher women's swimming and diving team earned two Big Ten wins, defeating Ohio State and Michigan State in a double dual, Saturday, in Columbus, Ohio. Minnesota defeated host Ohio State, 156-143, while defeating the Spartans, 217.5-81.5, Gopher sources report.
The Golden Gophers started the day with a second and fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Sara Vine, Krista Kezbers, Jennifer Chang and Kate Hardt finished second overall with a time of 3:55.14. Katy Coombe, Sarah Perrott, Jennifer Hasling and Erin O'Neil combined for a time of 4:00.62, finishing fourth overall. The Gophers' relays had the most points in the event. Ohio State finished first and seventh, while MSU added a third and fifth-place finish.
Valerie Tukey and Amy Killpatrick added second and third-place finishes in the 1,650 freestyle event. Tukey clocked a time of 17:21.55 and finished second overall, while Killpatrick added a time of 17:50.67 and placed third. Minnesota placed three swimmers in the top five in the 200 free. Leading the Gophers was Hardt, placing second with a time of 1:51.32. Perrott was right behind Hardt, finishing third with a time of 1:54.98. Chang chipped in a time of 1:56.29, placing fifth overall.
Katie Wind added Minnesota's first event win in the 100 back, finishing in a time of 58.48. She added a second-place finish in the 200 back, clocking a time of 2:06.28. Bridget McCoy swept the breaststroke events, winning both the 100 and 200 events. McCoy won the 100 with a time of 1:05.50, while winning the 200 in 2:22.52.
Although Minnesota did not finish in the top two in the 200 butterfly, the Gophers captured the No. 3-5 spots. O'Neil added a third-place finish with a time of 2:08.18, while Sarah Solfelt finished fourth in 2:08.27. Michelle Omdahl chipped in a time of 2:10.78 for fifth overall, followed by Lindsey St. Martin finishing in a time of 2:11.12.
Coombe added a second-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 23.96, followed by Hasling with a fourth-place showing in 24.11. Kezbers added a time of 24.37 and seventh place overall. Perrott finished third in the 100 free event (52.09), followed by Coombe in fourth (52.35) and Hasling (53.01).
Hardt won her first of two individual events, first in the 500 free and
later in the 200 individual medley. Hardt clocked a winning time of 4:55.15 in the 500 free, while adding the top time of 2:07.50 in the 200 IM.
Minnesota finished the day with a win in the 400 free relay. The Gophers clocked a time of 3:28.84, while Michigan State finished second in 3:30.91.
In the diving action, Jessica Livingston led the Gophers in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Livingston finished second in the 1-meter with a score of 263.45. She followed with a third-place showing in the 3-meter with a score of 287.10. Abbie Bowden added a score of 261.80 and a third-place finish in the 1-meter. She finished fifth in the 3-meter event with a score of 259.25.
The Gophers hit the road again next weekend, this time in a Quad Dual with Purdue, Wisconsin and Illinois in West Lafayette, Ind. Friday's events begin at 6 p.m., while Saturday's competition begins at noon.
