Minnesota vs. Iowa State

AMES, Iowa, October 15. THE Minnesota women's swimming and diving team used 13 victories and 199 points to defeat Iowa State, 199-100, on the road in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Beyer Pool. The win improved the Golden Gophers' record to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in Big Ten action.

Minnesota posted four meet records against the Cyclones, while sophomore Maggie Keefer posted two NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks and junior Katie Grunawalt added another.

The Golden Gophers' freshman class impressed in the meet, posting seven of the team's 13 wins, with rookie Kiera Janzen tallying the first win of the meet for the visiting squad and setting a meet record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:03.51. Fellow freshman Christie Clarke finished in second place in the event in 10:16.53.

Freshman Devin Ste. Marie and sophomore Tess Behrens finished one-two in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:55.26 and 1:56.05, respectively, while freshman Katie Anton followed with a win in the 100 backstroke in 57.81.

Junior Elizabeth Weitz took the 200 butterfly title in 2:07.89 and sophomore Jenna Howenstein followed close behind with a second-place time of 2:10.30.

For the second-consecutive week, Keefer won 1-meter diving with a meet record and NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark of 305.92, and Grunawalt posted her first NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark in 3-meter diving with a score of 305.85, good for first place ahead of Keefer. The sophomore set her second NCAA Zone Diving qualifying mark of the day with a score of 294.90 with her second-place finish.
Behrens continued her strong start to the 2011-12 season with a victory in the 100 freestyle (52.45), and Anton clocked her second win of the day with a meet-record mark of 2:02.17 in the 200 backstroke.

Weitz followed with her second win of the meet in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.72) and Clarke tallied her first win with a 5:03.52 finish in the 500 freestyle, followed by Ste. Marie in 5:11.06.

The 100 butterfly title was claimed by senior Melissa Nelson in a time of 58.76 and the 200 individual medley title belonged to freshman Clare Chamberlain as she clocked in at 2:08.53.

Ste. Marie, Clarke, Behrens and sophomore Monica Radecke finished off the day with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:35.02), and Nelson, Herrild, Anton and Janzen touched in second place with a time of 3:37.07.

The Gophers return to action next weekend when they host Kansas in non-conference action at the University Aquatic Center. Following the meet with the Jayhawks, Minnesota will host its Alumni Reception at the University Hotel Minneapolis at 6 p.m.
