Michael Andrew, Katie Drabot Have Huge Days At West Jr. National Championships

It was a record setting day for Indie Swimming’s Michael Andrew.

After setting a new 15-16 National Age Group record in the 200-yard individual medley this morning, Andrew broke his own record in evening finals. Andrew posted a time of 1:42.77, nearly four second ahead of Nitro Swim Team’s Sean Grieshop, who finished in second.

The evening started with the women’s 500-yard freestyle. Katie Drabot of Ozaukee Aquatics won the event with a time of 4:40.49. Taylor Ault took second with a time of 4:41.73. Grieshop won the men’s event by nearly five seconds with a time of 4:15.53. Taylor Abbott, Grieshop’s Nitro teammate, finished in second.

Drabot picked up her second win of the evening in the women’s 200-yard individual medley. The Stanford recruit posted a time of 1:56.05, winning the race by over two seconds.

Drabot’s night was not over. She won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.49. Olivia Calegan finished in second place. The event marked a sweep of the night’s women’s events for Drabot.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Ryan Hoffer took home the gold in the men’s event. He posted a time of 19.06, enough to win by over eight-tenths of a second. Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics’ Albert Gwo won the silver medal with a time of 19.94.

The evening’s last event was 400-yard medley relay.

Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics won the women’s event in 3:38.07. The team consisted of backstroker Chloe Isleta, breaststroker Grace Zhao, butterflier Gabrielle Anderson and freestyler Isabelle Henig. Crow Canyon Country Club was second with a time of 3:40.80.

In the men’s event, Palo Alto Stanford was also victorious. The team of backstroker Benjamin Ho, breaststroker Jeremy Babinet, butterflier Joe Molinari and freestyler Gwo posted a time of 3:13.37.

Going into tomorrow, Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics has a commanding lead in terms of team points. Their men’s and women’s combined team has earned 393 points. Scottsdale Aquatic Club is in second with 247.
