Men’s NCAA Div. I Champs: Stanford Leads Qualifying on Day Two

By Shelly Ripple

ATHENS, Georgia, March 29. AFTER the second day of preliminary competition, the men are continuing to challenge the standard that the women set last week
in Austin. Look for American and NCAA records to be set tonight in several events.

At the end of the first day of competition, the battle between Stanford and Texas was shaping up nicely. Texas has 163 points, followed closely by Stanford with 143. However, Stanford had a stellar morning today, and leads the field with 11 swims tonight in the top 8. Texas is second with eight in the top 8 (both including the two relays). Rounding out the top
three teams is Arizona with 104 points, but the Wildcats have only three swims in tonight's finals.

Off this morning's prelims, Stanford may be able to make up that 20-point deficit from this morning. But, once again, diving may make the difference. Texas has four divers in the 3-meter springboard, including Olympian Troy Dumais; Stanford has only one diver, Adam Peterson.

Here's the way the prelims went this morning:

200 yard Medley Relay
WISCONSIN was the surprise top qualifier this morning with 1:26.39. Brendan Coyne led off for Wisconsin with the fastest backstroke spilt of the morning, 21.65.
However, tonight, watch out for Texas, which is seeded second, and California which is tied for third.

Anthony Ervin anchored the relay for Cal with a
18.87, the only sub-19 spilt of the morning.

400 yard IM
USC's Erik Vendt had a very impressive swim, showing maturity as he recorded the morning's fastest time in a new pool record 3:44.41, despite his cap and goggles coming off as he dove in the water. Robert Margalis, who goggles came don around his mouth last night on the dive of the 500 free, qualified second in 3:44.55. Rob had the fastest freestyle spilt of the morning with a 51.08.

MarKus Rogan, from Stanford, and Tamas Kerekjarto, from Southern Cal, tied for third with a time of 3:45.45. All four of these men have a chance to break the 3:40 barrier.

Tim Siciliano, a senior from Michigan who is the 3-time defending champion in the event, failed to qualify for the finals. He placed ninth in prelims with a 3:47.43.

100 yard Butterfly
Texas' Ian Crocker broke the pool and American record with a time of 45.70. Ian was only 11 one-hundredths of a second off the NCAA record held by Lars Frolander.

Stanford's Peter Marshall and Matt McDonald qualified second and third respectively in 46.39 and 46.50. Texas frosh Dan DiToro, who was developed by Misty Hyman's coach, Bob Gillett, was fifth (46.70), right behind Arizona's Roland Schoeman (46.57). It took 47.09 to make finals, 47.53 to make consols.

Tonight's race will be an exciting one, but keep your eyes on Ian Crocker in the middle of the pool to be the first man under 45.5 seconds.

Florida's Stephen Sioui is the fastest qualifier in a pool record time of 1:35.30. Dan Ketchum is seeded second with a time of 1:35.34. However, watch out for tonight's third qualifier, Klete Keller, defending champion in this event and winner of the 500 freestyle last night. Klete's goal is to break 1:34.0.

Like the other events, the 200 free will be a close one. The top eight seeds tonight are within eight- tenths of a second of each other.

100 yard Breaststroke
Defending champion, Brendan Hansen of Texas, leads the field with a qualifying time of 53.25. Auburn's Patrick Calhoun is second in a time of 53.47. Jeremy Linn's NCAA meet record of 52.32 may be in jeopardy as the top six swimmers are all under 54 seconds, but his NCAA/American mark of 51.86 is probably safe.

100 yardBackstroke
Cal's Alex Lim recorded the top time this morning with a 46.45. However, Stanford's dominance in the backstroke emerged as the Cardinal qualified four swimmers in the top eight.

Stanford's Dan Westcott, Peter Marshall, and Randall Bal are seeded second, third and fourth, respectively. Watch out for Peter Marshall, who recorded one of the fastest times ever in the event, leading off the 400 medley relay yesterday morning with a 45.54 leadoff split.

Rounding out the field in eighth place is Stanford's Jayme Cramer with a time of 47.46.

800 yard Freestyle Relay
Michigan has the fastest time coming into the competition with a 6:22.82. But, tonight's race will be a close one with Florida, USC, Minnesota, Texas, and Stanford all fighting for the title.
