Men’s NCAA Div. I Champs, Day 2 Prelims: Texas Sets American Record in 200 Medley Relay

By Phillip Whitten

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS, March 23. BOTH Texas and Stanford continued to swim well on this, the second morning of prelims at the men's NCAA Division I Swimming Championships in College Station, Texas. But Stanford's disqualification in the very first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, dealt a crushing blow to the Cardinal's hopes for a team title. To add insult to injury, Texas qualified first in the relay in American record time.

Auburn and USC continued to swim consistently well, as did Michigan in the longer events.

Here's how it went this morning:

200 YARD MEDLEY RELAY
Texas began the day where it left off yesterday, breaking the American record in a medley relay. Last night it was the 400 yard event, this morning the 200 yard sprint. The Longhorn team of Matt Ulrickson (back, 21.74), Brendan Hansen (breast, 23.93), Nate Dusing (fly, 20.25) and Leffie Crawford (free, 19.34) clocked 1:25.26, breaking the American record of 1:25.37 set by Tennessee at the SEC Championships this year. It was two-hundredths slower than the NCAA record set by Auburn in 1998.

Tennessee qualified second in 1:26.48. Stanford, which would have clocked about 1:26.0, was disqualified.

Tennessee's Michael Gilliam had the fast backstroke split at 21.40, followed by Ulrickson (21.74) and Texas A&M's Riley Janes (21.75).

Stanford's Anthony Robinson, still smoking from last night's upset win in the 50 free, had the fastest breaststroke split, 23.83, followed by Tennessee's Jeremy McDonnell (23.83), Auburn's Pat Calhoun (23.92) andHansen (23.93).

Dusing's 20.25 fly split was the fastest of the morning. Stanford's Bobby O'Bryan was the only other swimmer able to get under 21 seconds (20.59).

Anthony Ervin continued shis consistently fast swimming, clocking 18.78 for his freestyle anchor leg. Auburn's Greg Busse was second fastest at 19.02.

400 YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
Texas was shut out of the top 8 in the 400 IM prelims, though the 'Horns did manage to qualify swimmers in
9th and 14th place. Stanford did only slightly better, with swimmers qualifying seventh and 15th.

USC swam well, placing three swimmers in the Big Final, while Florida had two.

Michigan's Tim Sicilano, who won this event two years ago, qualified first in a very strong 3:42.61. USC's Erik Vendt, the defending champion, is second at 3:44.00. It took a speedy 3:45.87 to make it into the top 8.

100 YARD BUTTERFLY
Texas set itself up to score big in the 100 fly, qualifying three men in the Big Final. Ian Crocker was the #1 qualifier in 46.05. Teammates Tommy Hannan (5th in 46.76) and Nate Dusing (sixth, 46.77) will also be in the hunt for the top place on the podium.

In contrast, Stanford placed only one man in the top 8–Peter Marshall, seventh at 46.83–though the Cardinal has two swimmers in consols. USC put three swimmers in the Big Finals.

200 YARD FREESTYLE
It's a tightly-packed bunch that qualified first through seventh in the 200 free. Texas Olympian Scott Goldblatt had the morning's fastest time, 1:35.36, as the top seven men swam 1:35s. Arizona's Jay Schryver had the second fastest time, 1:35.52.

Texas qualified first, third (Jamie Rauch, 1:35.54), fourth (Chris Kemp, 1:35.85) and fifteenth. Stanford placed only one swimmer in the finals–Adam Messner, who had the fastest splits through the first 150 yards, in sixth. USC, led by Klete Keller in fifth, has two swimmers in the Big Finals, one in consols.

100 YARD BREASTSTROKE
Freshman Brendan Hansen kept the 'Horns' juggernaut rolling, qualifying first in the 100 breast in 52.78. It should be a very close final, as Stanford's Anthony Robinson was a close second (52.87) with Auburn's Dave Denniston right behind (52.90). Robinson split half a second faster than anyone else at the 50–24.36–but he faded in the final lap.

Auburn stands to pick up major points in this event this evening, with three swimmers in the Big Final and two in consols. Only Hansen qualified for Texas, while Stanford had Robinson (second) and Michael Bruce (14th)

100 YARD BACKSTROKE
Stanford's surprising freshman, Peter Marshall, qualified first in 46.35, at the head of four Cardinals making it into the Big Final. dan Wescott is third (46.94), Markus Rogan sixth (47.13) and Randall Bal eighth (47.41).

The Longhorns' Tommy Hannan is second fastest at 46.94, while Matt Ulrickson is ninth.
