Men’s NCAA Div. I Championships: Garrett Weber-Gale Takes the 100 Free in an Upset

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Georgia, March 25. WHILE the sellout crowd watched the dual duel between Arizona and Auburn in the middle of the pool, Texas junior Garrett Weber-Gale stole the 100 free from lane 8.

Weber-Gale was ahead all the way, splitting 19.98 at the 50 before touching home in 42.11. Stanford’s Benjamin Wildman-Tobriner was second in 42.17.

Arizona got the better of Auburn in the final as Simon Burnett was third and Lyndon Ferns fifth; the Tigers’ Cesar Cielo and Matt Targett were fourth and sixth. But Auburn extended its lead by placing ninth, thirteenth and fourteenth in the B final, while Arizona picked up six points for eleventh.

At the end of the 100 free, Auburn had extended its lead to nine points: 397.5 to 388.5.
