Laura Val, Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen Among World Record Breakers at Pacific Masters Championships

SAN MATEO, California, August 13. LAURA Val, Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, Ruth Shaps and Paul Carter set five world records among them at the Pacific Masters Long Course Championships, with Val breaking two of her own marks.

Val, who has been breaking world records nearly every time she dives into the pool in 2012, started off with a world mark in the 400 free with a 4:59.82 in the 60-64 age group. Her previous record was 5:03.88, which means Val is the oldest female swimmer to crack the five-minute barrier in the event. She also took down her world record of 2:50.13 in the 200 IM with a 2:50.00.

Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen has also been setting multiple world records this year, and continued her streak with a 1:11.78 in the 100 backstroke, eclipsing Karen Andrus-Hughes' record of 1:13.55 in the 50-54 age group.

Ruth Shaps shattered the world mark in the 100 freestyle for the 65-69 age group with a 1:08.65, taking down Germany's Christel Schulz's record of 1:12.00.

Paul Carter added to his list of world records through his long Masters swimming career with a 1:00.56 in the 100 butterfly for the 55-59 age group, taking down Greg Shaw's six-year-old record of 1:01.05.
