Iowa State vs. South Dakota

VERMILLION, South Dakota, October 28. THE Iowa State swimming and diving team collected 14 of the 16 events Friday night against South Dakota to give Iowa State a 209-91 victory over the Coyotes. The win improves Iowa State to a 2-1 dual meet record for the season.

"I was very pleased with the way the women competed tonight," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "The women raced the way we asked them to compete with South Dakota being 25-meters instead of yards."

To start off the meet the Cyclones 200-meter medley relay consisting of Dani Harris, Imelda Wistey, Sarah Norris and Amanda Paulson came in strong with a first place finish with a time of 2:01.11.

Iowa State continued to see success in the 800-meter freestyle. Elizabeth Kleiner and Kristy Kunkel took first and second place finishes with times of 9:20.58 and 9:27.83, respectively.

Leading the Cyclones for the night was Wistey with three individual top finishes and a first place finish in the medley relay. In the 100-meter breaststroke Wistey touched first with a time of 1:13.51. Wistey continued her success in the 200-meter breaststroke and 200-meter IM with first place times of 2:42.29 and 2:26.56, respectively.

"Imelda is swimming faster every time," Sorenson said. "She is very coachable and she is doing everything that she needs to do."

Sarah Deis saw success in the 400-meter freestyle with a first place finish, touching with a time of 4:37.47. Meredith Doran took second with a time of 4:38.74.

The Cyclones were victorious in the 100-meter butterfly with top three finishes. Kleiner picked up her second win of the night, touching in a time of 1:06.19. In second was Tiana Wollin with a time of 1:06.38 and Brittia Sortland going 1:08.06.

"I think we did a great job tonight," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "We were very aggressive and didn't hold back. Although we did not do perfectly, we still preformed very well overall."

On the 3-meter board the Cyclones took top three finishes, with Nicholson leading with a final score of 270.50.

"Jessica has really stepped it up and is diving at a much higher level," Warrick noted. "She is diving much more consistent and there is still room for improvement, overall I am very happy."

Nelson finished in second place with a score of 248.60 and Cohea took third with 216.35.

The Cyclones will be back in the pool tomorrow at South Dakota State with the meet slated to begin at 1 p.m. CDT.

"We are looking to turn around tomorrow and try to compete at a higher level," Sorenson said. "After a good meet we really want to step up."
