High School State Championships: New York Boys

BUFFALO, New York, March 5. TAPPAN Zee's 400 yard free relay team of senior Jun Yonghoon, junior Kevin Schaub, senior Lance Neuendorf and junior Jack Carey combined for the only state record of the meet with their 3:06.99 at the New York State High School Swimming and Diving Championships. The previous record was 3:07.85 by New Hartford in 1993. The meet was held March 2-3 in Buffalo.

Tappan Zee claimed the state title with 138 points, followed by Fairport (122), New Paltz (116), Clarence (111) and Oswego (106). Pittsford finished out of fifth by just one point (105).

Oswego senior Drake Becksted was the only double event winner, scoring victories in both the 50 free (20.52) and 100 free (44.96). Three other seniors ended their high school careers with an event win: Amsterdam's Antonio Lanzi in the 200 free (1:38.70), Jamestown's Andrew Marsh in the 100 fly (49.75) and Great Neck South's Samuel Mo in the 200 IM (1:52.81).

In his first high school state meet, Huntington freshman Gunther Cassell scored a triumph in the 100 breast with his 57.20. Jeffrey Williamson, a junior at Victor, came in first in the 500 free with his 4:32.97. Shenendehowa's Ryan Gordon, a sophomore, posted a 50.13 win in the 100 back. Albany Academy junior Manny Pollard's score of 503.10 in diving gave him the diving championship.

New Paltz' quartet of sophomores Hudson Carroll and Aodhan Fogarty, with seniors Mathew Hasbrouck and Ben Nadareski, claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:35.25. The 200 free relay went to Fairport, with its team of sophomores David Howard and Charlie Morales plus seniors Evan Zheng and John Holden.
