Greensboro College Adds Men’s Swimming, Along With Women’s Golf

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, December 23. GREENSBORO College will sponsor intercollegiate women's golf and men's swimming, President Dr. Lawrence Czarda announced today. The Pride will begin competing in the sports starting with the 2011-12 academic year.

With the two new offerings, student-athletes can now compete in 18 NCAA Division III sports at Greensboro College. "We studied the feasibility of adding teams this Fall and felt that women's golf and men's swimming would be a great fit at GC," Pride Athletics Director Jean Lojko said.

"There's no facilities issue – we already have an outstanding swimming facility, and Greensboro and the Triad are a golf-rich environment," Czarda said. "For a minimal investment – two assistant-coach positions, travel and recruiting – we're building on existing, strong programs and facilities and we're adding gender equity. And our research shows that the kind of student-athlete who typically excels in these sports perfectly fits our profile."

The USA South does not sponsor either sport. In women's golf, however, USAS member Methodist competes. A number of other conference members are cosidering adding the sport.

"We have one of the best men's golf programs in the nation," Lojko said. "We're confident we can build a strong women's team under Dirk Fennie's leadership. Like the men's program, the team will use the Bryan Park practice facility. We already have a few women golfers on campus who are excited about competing."

Women's Swimming Head Coach Scot Budde will lead the new men's program. While there aren't any Division III programs in North Carolina, The Pride can travel to Virginia, and compete locally against many DII and NAIA teams.

"We're excited about the Royce Reynolds Family Student Life Center Pool as a meet venue," Lojko said. "It's a great place to watch a meet and our new timing system makes it a first-class competition site. We also believe young men want to swim in college and look to provide that opportunity."

Greensboro College, an independent, coeducational college affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is an academic and social community that unites the liberal arts and Judeo-Christian values in an atmosphere of diversity and mutual respect.

Founded in 1838 and located near downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,200 students from 26 states, the District of Columbia and 24 nations in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master's degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational organizations.
