RIO CORONDA, Argentina, March 3. FRANCE'S Stéphane Gomez and Germany's Britta Kamrau were the male ad female winners, respectively, of the first 2004 race of the FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup, held in Rio Coronda, Argentina, on February 29. Gomez completed the 57km (35-mile) race in 8 hours 22 minutes 58 seconds, while Kamrau was only four minutes slower: 8:26:02.
For the French swimmer, this was his first victory in a World Cup event, while Britta Kamrau earned her seventh triumph since 1997. Moreover, the German was the overall winner of the women’s ranking of the 2003 edition of the FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup.
In a race followed by thousands of spectators along the river Coronda, the remaining spots of the podium went, in the men’s classification, to Gilles Rondy (FRA, second) and Facundo Quiroga (ARG, third). In the women’s competition, Shelley Clark (AUS) was second and Esther Nuñez (ESP) got the bronze.
The race was contested by 20 swimmers (13 men and seven women) from 10 countries.
The next race of the 2004 FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup will take place on March 19 in El Ain Sokhna (Red Sea), Matrouh (EGY, 10 km)
