It took a video finish to decide the winner, but in the end Eva Fabian of the United States stood tall on the podium as the gold medalist of the women’s 10K at the 2015 Pan American Games.

Fabian collected her first major international 10K victory at Lake Ontario with the victory in 2:03:17.0. Previously, she won the 5K at the World Open Water Championships in 2010 in Roberval.

Fabian’s previous international medals were 10K silvers at both the 2010 and 2014 Pan Pacific Championships as well as bronze at the 25K event at the 2013 World Championships.

Fabian touched the finish wall just ahead of Venezuela’s Paola Perez Sierra, also registered at 2:03:17.0. This is a big step up for Perez Sierra, having previously only finished second in the 10K at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games.

Ecuador’s Samantha Arevalo Salinas earned bronze in 2:03:17.1. That’s her best international finish to date.

USA’s Emily Brunemann took fourth overall in 2:03:17.5, while early leader Kristel Kobrich of Chile wound up fifth in 2:03:25.8.  Kobrich had set the pace through nearly the entire race before the pack overtook her.
