Diana Margarida Duraes Sets National Record at Portuguese Nationals
After two days of flirting with national records, the 2015 Portuguese Nationals finally saw one of the marks go down. Oddly enough, it came from a second-place finish on day three.
Julie Aglund Lauridsen won the women’s 400-meter free in 4:15.59. Second-place finisher Diana Margarida Duraes broke her own national record time of 4:19.40 with a 4:19.09 effort. Tamila Hryhorivna Holub clocked a 4:22.91 to place third.
Svenja Stoffel took the women’s 100-meter fly in 59.65, narrowly defeating Emilie Beckmann’s 59.83. Christina Munkholm couldn’t break the one-minute mark and finished third in 1:00.55.
Sam Horrocks won the men’s 100-meter fly in 53.89. Miguel Duarte Nascimento finished a nearby second in 54.24, while Nuno Goncalo Quintanilha made the podium with a 55.00.
Victoria Kaminskaya ended up victorious in the women’s 200-meter breast with a 2:30.43. She began to extend her lead over Ana Pinho Rodrigues after the 100-meter mark, and Rodrigues fell to a 2:32.45 finish. Barbara Sofia Barata was a distant third in 2:39.81.
Christopher Steeples added another win to his weekend with a 2:16.46 200-meter breast. Jolann Bovey was right behind Steeples with a 2:17.10. Diogo Filipe Carvalho wound up third with a 2:17.85.
Rebecca Guy zipped to a 25.86 first-place finish in the women’s 50-meter free. She won in convincing fashion over Svenja Stoffel, who clocked a 26.46. Ana Pinho Rodrigues notched a 26.47 for third.
Alexandre Scrudier Agostinho was nowhere near his national record time of 22.36, but he held on to win the men’s 50-meter free with a 23.10. Frederik Siem Pedersen touched second at 23.19, and Gustavo Almeida Madureira hit third with a 23.36.
British swimmer Jessica Fullalove has had a strong showing at the meet. She continued her hot streak with a 1:00.42 win in the women’s 100-meter back. Sarah Bro took second in 1:02.46, while Ana Sofia Leite rounded out the top three with a 1:03.60.
Denmark’s Magnus Jakupsson won the men’s 100-meter back in 55.80, ahead of Nathan Keith Theodoris who touched to a 56.30. Sam Horrocks clinched third in 56.97.
Danish swimmer Anton Oerskov Ipsen crushed the men’s 400-meter free in 3:50.23. His closest competition, Gonzalo Carazo Barbero, finished second in 4:00.54. Mario Alexandre Pereira posted a 4:00.64 to earn bronze.
On the fourth and final day of the meet, Florbela Cavaco Machado opened the session with a grueling 17:02.64 win in the women’s 1500-meter free. Vania Soares Neves took second in 17:10.45. Francisca Gomes Azevedo trailed to third in 17:51.62.
Oli Mortensen won an extremely tight 800-meter free ahead of Alexandre Valdagua Coutinho. Mortensen had trailed by mere milliseconds throughout the race, until he came back on the final 150 meters to win in 8:15.60. Coutinho’s 8:15.65, however, was a national record for the 18-year old boys age group. Mario Andre Bonanca came in third with an 8:21.24.
Ana Catarina Monteiro dominated the women’s 200-meter fly in 2:11.94. Emma Smithurst took second in 2:14.69, while Isabella Sorensen fell to third in 2:16.47.
Rebecca Guy won yet another freestyle race, this time posted a top time of 55.78 in the women’s 100-meter free. Sarah Bro silvered in 56.21, while national record-holder Ana Sofia Leite just missed her record time with a 56.59 third-place finish.
In the men’s 100-meter free, Frederik Siem Pedersen clocked a first-place time of 50.45, finishing ahead of Mario Alexandre Pereira’s 50.92. Luis Emanuel Vaz made the podium with a 51.18.
Victoria Kaminskaya won the women’s 200-meter free in wire-to-wire fashion in 2:16.61. Diana Margarida Duraes swam a 2:19.62 to finish second, while Madalena Gomes Azevedo took third in 2:22.05.
Aleixs Manacas Santos had a comfortable lead en route to his 2:02.82 victory in the men’s 200-meter free. Tomas Miguel Veloso finished second in 2:05.27, while Thomas Paine wound up third in 2:05.69.
