Catalina Foothills Sweeps Arizona 4A High School Championships

TEMPE, Arizona, November 1. CATALINA Foothills High School of Tucson swept the boys' and girls' team titles at the Arizona 4A State High School Championships, held in rare dripping, drizzling weather at Arizona State University in Tempe.

For the boys, it was Catalina Foothills fourth straight crown, and they did it in style, racking up 379 points by cleaning up in the relays.
Thunderbird was a distant second with 197 points, followed by Chaparral with 189.

The Catalina Foothill girls were led by freshman Molly Houlton, who won back-to-back events and anchored the CFHS team to a 4A record in the 200 free relay. The Catalina Foothill girls were not quite as dominant as the boys, but still breezed to victory with 319 points. Sunnyslope, led by another freshman sensation, Katherine Raatz, were second with 234.5 points, followed by Chaparral with 219.

Boys' Meet
Catalina Foothills' Dane Patching won the 50 free and was third in the 100. Teammate Will Weeks was third in the 100 fly and second in the 100 breast. The duo also swam the last two legs of CF's winning 400 free relay. Weeks also swam on the winning 200 medley relay.

Sabino High took home four individual titles, but the Sabercats were hurt when two relays were DQ'ed at regionals a week ago. Senior Geoff Davis won the 200 IM (1:56.76) and 100 breast (59.36). Nick Sparks took the 100 fly in 51.01 and teammate Matt Barnard won the 100 free in 46.49.

Scottsdale Saguaro senior Phil Owen swept the 200 and 500 freestyle events, coming from begind in both races. In the 500, where he was the defending champion, he clocked 4;37.78, just out-touching Sabino's Dan Waller (4:37.86).

Girls' Meet
Goodyear Millennium sophomore Skye Elbert repeated as chmpion in both the 50 free and 100 back, despite having been sidelined most of the last six weeks by illness. In the 50, Elbert, a member of the US Junior National Team, clocked a 4A record 23.46, just beating out freshman Katherine Raatz (23.65). In the 100, her 56.12 was half a second shy of her own 4A mark set last year.

Raatz, a freshman at Thunderbird H.S. and the Junior National champion in the 100m fly, clocked a 4A record 55.78 to take the 100 fly. Her time shaved 2-hundredths off the old mark set by Emily Thompson.

Ctaalina Foothills frosh Molly Houlton won back-to-back races, taking the 200 free (1:51.33) by nearly three seconds and, five minutes later, the 200 IM (2:05.44) by four. She then anchored her team to a state record 1:37.18 in the 200 free relay. The old mark of 1:37.47 was set by Catalina Foothills last year.
