The University of Tennessee continues to build its distance freestyle program with an early verbal commitment from Wisconsin native Cassy Jernberg.

“Tennessee was the best choice for me because of its distance program and the team’s culture of hard work,” Jernberg said. “I know that here I will be able to continue to progress not only in the pool, but in long course and open water events as well. I so much look forward to being on the team and to complete for Tyler Fenwick and Matt Kredich.”

The Volunteers won’t welcome Jernberg for another 15 months, as the 17-year-old is completing her junior year of high school. It’s another early commitment for a member of the high school class of 2016, joining the likes of Kylie Jordan and others.

“Committing this early is uncommon, but I chose to because of my confidence in this school and to be able to continue to focus on training and school throughout my senior year.”

Jernberg will swim at the Olympic Trials next year in the 400 and 800 freestyles, with lifetime bests of 4:16.21 and 8:44.60 under her belt at this point. She swam those times this past January, so expect her to make some time drops in the summer championship season.

In short course yards, she already has the potential to make a big impact for Tennessee, particularly in the 1650 freestyle, where Jernberg holds a personal best of 16:09.55. Under the tutelage of associate head coach and distance program leader Tyler Fenwick, expect a sub-16:00 from Jernberg immediately.

She also has some open water swimming experience, something that will come in handy at Tennessee where Fenwick is training some of the top open water swimmers in the country. She was 36th at the 2014 open water nationals in the 10K and 22nd in the 5K race.

As a member of the Schroeder YMCA team, Jernberg won the 1650 at the recent YMCA nationals and was seventh in the 1650 freestyle at the winter USA Swimming nationals.
