Ball State Hires Akron’s Kristy Castillo as Head Women’s Swimming Coach

MUNCIE, Indiana, May 22. KRISTY Castillo, an assistant women's swim coach at Akron since 2003, has been named the new head women's swimming and diving coach at Ball State, according to Ball State athletics director Bill Scholl.

“We are excited to have Coach Castillo on board,” Scholl says. “She is an energetic coach with quality experience. Her experience and personality are a good fit for us at Ball State. We look forward to her beginning work at Ball State.”

Castillo replaces Laura Seibold-Caudill, who retired as the Ball State women's swimming and diving coach after the 2011-12 season – her 33rd year at the helm of the Cardinals.

“I have a passion for coaching and being surrounded by the student-athlete experience,” Castillo says. “I approach every day and every situation with an open mind and never underestimate the ability of the student-athlete. I look forward to developing quality student-athletes at Ball State. I feel fortunate to be the head coach for such an established program with a strong tradition of excellence in the classroom and in the pool. It is an honor to be named the head coach at Ball State and I would like the thank the athletics department for this opportunity.”

In addition to her coaching at Akron, Castillo also served as an assistant lecturer at Akron from 2008-12. She also served as a coach and camp counselor at the Stanford Swim Camp in the summers of 2006 through 2009.

A 2003 graduate of Akron, Castillo began her coaching career as the head swim coach at Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio, in the summers of 2003 and 2004. She earned her master's degree from Akron in 2006.

As a student-athlete for the Zips, the North Canton, Ohio, native, served as team captain for Akron in 2001 and 2002 and was a four-year letterwinner. She set school records in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and as a member of four relay teams in her career. She still owns some of the school's top times in several events.
