Ashley Twichell Wins Speedo 10 km Challenge in South Africa

PIETERMARITZBURG, South Africa. February 10. 22-year-old Ashley Twichell traveled 34 hours from Mission Viejo, California to Pietermaritzburg in South Africa in time to compete in the Midmar Mile Speedo 10km Challenge.

Her solid, evenly split time of 2 hours 2 minutes led the 24-person field from start to finish. With 2 days rest, she should have enough time to gear up for a highly anticipated race against 2-time world champion and 7-time Midmar Mile defending champion Keri-Anne Payne of Great Britain.

The expected weather on this weekend's Midmar Mile may include rain and winds, but it has not stopped record numbers of athletes from entering one of the annual highlights of the world's open water swimming season.

The final results (including split times of each 2.5K loop):

1. Ashley Twichell (30:09 + 30:37 + 30:58 + 30:40) 2:02:25
