Army Women, UMass-Amherst Men Win Terrier Invitational

Boston University hosted eight teams at the Agganis Arena in Boston, Massachusetts, for the three-day Terrier Invitational.

Day One

University of Bridgeport (Tatiana Shepel, Nina Stegu, Alja Tavcar, Yekaterina Gahhokidze) won the first event of the meet, the women’s 200 medley relay, in 1:33.58. On the men’s side, Brandon McCredie, Chris Szekely, Adam Sjoholm, and Evin Rude of Army won the event in 1:22.29.

Colgate’s Morgan Cohara won the women’s 500 freestyle in a time of 4:51.45, followed closely by Boston’s Stephanie Nasson in 4:51.56. Nasson’s teammate Sarah Hargrave rounded out the top three with a 4:54.42. University of Massachusetts-Amherst’s Ales Bomprezzi shaved nearly six seconds off his prelim swim to win the men’s 500 freestyle in 4:26.91. Second went to Army’s Thomas Ottman (4:28.68), and third went to Massachusetts’s Oliver Wyeth (4:28.98).

Boston swept the top three spots in the women’s 200 IM, led by Erin Nabney in 2:02.75. Mika Spencer finished second in 2:03.82, followed by Julimar Avila in 2:05.01. Bridgeport’s Ivan Capan led the way in the men’s 200 IM, winning in 1:49.18. Also under 1:50 was Boston’s Mun Hon Lee (1:49.41) and Army’s Jay Yang (1:49.52).

Army’s Molly Mucciarone won the women’s 50 free in 23.07, followed by Boston College’s Maureen Barron (23.31) and Shepel (23.38). Boston College’s Dan Kelly was the only man under 20 seconds, setting a new pool record in the men’s 50 free with a 19.78. Second went to Massachusetts’s Owen Wright (20.54), followed by Bridgeport’s Didac Matsuyama.

Army (Kelly Hamilton, Kara Wineinger, Mucciarone, Monica Sowinski) grabbed the women’s 400 medley relay title in 3:47.81. Bridgeport’s Capan, Brian Kelly, Will du Plessis, and Matsuyama combined again to dominate the men’s 400 medley relay, winning by over three seconds in 3:16.41.

Boston dove their way to the top three spots in the women’s 1m diving. Lizzie Tillo won the event with a total score of 253.60, followed closely by Kyra Tatlow (250.85) and Kalli Roebelen (145.20). Boston College’s Cole Malatesta dove his way to first place in the men’s 3m diving with a score of 337.65, beating Boston’s Eric Mitchell (260.10). Fairfield University’s Daniel Pires was third (252.70).

Day Two

Army’s Cecilia Croman, Wineinger, Mucciarone, and Kelly started Saturday night off with a win in the women’s 200 freestyle relay with a 1:44.61. The foursome of Capan, Kelly, du Plessis, and Matsuyama combined yet again to capture the men’s 200 freestyle relay title in 1:29.59.

Massachusetts nabbed the first two spots in the women’s 400 IM; first went to Meriza Werenski (4:23.43) and second went to Jenna Diamond (4:24.71). Boston’s Danielle Yoon was third in 4:26.62. Yang broke the pool record, winning the men’s 400 IM by over three seconds in 3:52.21. Boston College’s Taylor Cortens was second in 3:55.24, and Boston’s Garrett Chin was third in 3:55.43.

Mucciarrone won her second individual event of the meet, grabbing the women’s 100 fly (54.88). Second went to Massachusetts’ Cassie Sosnovich (55.70) followed by Avila (55.80). Matsuyama won the men’s 100 fly in 48.73, with teammate Kelly close behind (48.80). Boston College’s Kelly rounded out the top three in 49.30.

Cohara won the women’s 200 freestyle (1:50.76), followed by Spencer (1:50.97) and Vermont’s Kelly Lennon (1:51.04). Army dominated the men’s 200 freestyle, going 1-2-3: Szekely (1:39.79), Rude (1:40.26), and Devin McCall (1:40.42).

Vermont lit the pool on fire in the women’s 100 breaststroke with Shannon Cowley winning in 1:03.84 and teammate Haley Gula finishing second in 1:04.83. Army’s Jessica Ambrose was third in 1:05.20. Capan won his second individual event in the men’s 100 breast (54.88), setting a new pool record in the process. Boston’s Daniel Andronov was also under the old pool record in 55.17, followed by Army’s Colin Kanzari (57.07).

Cohara won her second event of the night, winning the women’s 100 back (56.33). Vermont’s Kira Hancock (56.64) and Hamilton (56.99) finished second and third, respectively. Massachusetts went 1-2 in the men’s 100 back, led by Kellen Gray in 48.90 and Wyeth (49.55). Bridgeport’s Kelly finished third in 49.56.

Boston’s A 800 free relay team (Nabney, Grace Anderson, Yoon, Nasson) won in a nail-biter in 7:29.39 over Army. Army (Rude, McCall, Yang, Szekely) completed Saturday’s swims with a win in the men’s 800 free relay (6:39.74) over Bridgeport and Massachusetts.

Boston again swept the top three spots in the women’s 3m diving, led by Roebelen (254.40), Tillo (252.75), and Tatlow (251.20). Malatesta easily won the men’s 1m diving with a score of 318.30. Boston’s Adam Gross was second (278.20) and Boston’s Jack McCarthy was third with (269.40).

Day Three

Nasson started the final session of the 2015 Terrier Invitational by winning the women’s 1650 by ten seconds in 16:43.24. Bridgeport’s Annagrazia Bonsanti was second (16:53.56) followed by Army’s Sabrina Mortell (17:04.79). Ottman won the men’s mile by over sixteen seconds in 15:33.09. Boston College’s Keating Mosher (15:49.49) and Massachusetts’ Kyle Vieira (15:53.76) rounded out the top three.

Cohara finished her individual swims with her fourth win in the women’s 200 back (2:00.54), followed by Boston’s Nikki Bookwalter (2:02.65) and Colgate’s Flora Hanson (2:03.35). Gray completed his backstroke sweep by winning the men’s 200 back in 1:47.61. Army’s Josh Sembrano finished second (1:48.18) followed by Massachussetts’ Heath Maginn (1:48.72).

Sowinski won the women’s 100 freestyle in 51.24, and Avila’s 51.31 out-touched Barron’s 51.32. Kelly grabbed the men’s 100 freestyle title in 44.76. Capan was second in 45.04, and Szekely was third in 45.29.

Nabney cruised to a win in the women’s 200 breaststroke (2:17.96) followed by Gula (2:20.17) and Boston’s Karla Ferrara (2:20.59). Andronov won the men’s 200 breaststroke by over three seconds in 2:02.28. Kanzari was second in 2:05.53, followed by Army’s Sam Mo in 2:06.00.

Colgate’s Erica Silverman took the top spot in the women’s 200 butterfly, winning in a 2:04.93. Mucciarone touched the wall second in 2:04.14, followed closely by teammate Shannon Rogers in 2:05.17. Army’s Jason Rodriquez won the men’s 200 butterfly in 1:49.79. Massachusetts’ Connar Patterson was second in 1:50.55, followed closely by Yang (1:50.89).

Boston (Nabney, Olivares, Spencer, Avila) crushed the women’s 400 free relay by winning in 3:24.77, and Army (Rude, McCredie, McCall, Szekely) out-touched Bridgeport by .02 to win the men’s 400 free relay in 3:00.37.
