AUSTIN – Abbey Weitzeil of Canyons Aquatic Club provided the highlight swim of the morning at the American Short Course Championships held in Austin, Texas.

Weitzeil lit the pool afire with a 21.79 this morning, which is not far off her personal best of 21.49 from December’s Winter Junior Nationals. Weitzeil is the fifth-ranked swimmer all time in the event, and could be looking for more this event.

The future California Golden Bear could leapfrog a pair of former Bears in Natalie Coughlin and Liv Jensen, and might potentially vie for Lara Jackson’s American record from 2009.

The 10th-ranked swimmer all time, Amanda Weir with a 21.62 from 2008, will be there to push her after qualifying second in 22.34.

Earlier in the day, NBAC’s Becca Mann let an NBAC 1-2-3-4 in the 500-yard free with a 4:37.98. Lotte Friis (4:39.17), Allison Schmitt (4:40.74) and Sierra Schmidt (4:41.43) qualified second through fourth.

NBAC’s Frank Dyer (4:18.12) and Zane Grothe (4:18.27) will do battle in the men’s 500-yard free after taking first and second out of prelims.

Aquazot’s Sonia Wang (1:58.17) and NBAC’s Austin Surhoff (1:43.47) led the way in the 200 IMs with Texas A&M’s Cory Bolleter pacing the men’s 50-yard free in 19.39.
