2017 European SC Championships: Another WJR for Kolesnikov, Top Seed for Cseh

The fifth and final morning of the 2017 European SC Championships has come and gone, setting the stage for one final night of fast racing.

Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov unleashed yet another World Junior and European Junior record on the meet with a top showing in the men’s 50 free prelims, while stalwart butterflyer Laszlo Cseh earned the top seed in his signature event: the 200 fly.

Women’s 50 Free

The women’s 50 free prelims were highlighted by the usual suspects. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom posted the top time of the morning at a 23.84, while Denmark’s Pernille Blume and the Netherlands’ Ranomi Kromowidjojo qualified close behind with times of 23.96 and 23.97.

Qualifying fourth overall was Russia’s Rozaliya Nasretdinova with a time of 24.03, just ahead of the Netherlands’ Femke Heemskerk and her time of 24.08.

France’s Charlotte Bonnet (24.17), Russia’s Maria Kameneva (24.28), and Norway’s Susann Bjoernsen (24.42) picked up sixth through eighth place qualifications.

Also qualifying for the semi-finals heat were Finland’s Mimosa Jallow (24.50), Italy’s Erika Ferraioli (24.57), Spain’s Lidon Munoz del Campo (24.59), Denmark’s Julie Kepp Jensen (24.63), Belarus’ Yuliya Khitraya (24.70), France’s Melanie Henique (24.78), Italy’s Aglaia Pezzato (24.83), and the Czech Republic’s Barbora Seemanova (24.89).

Men’s 50 Free

Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov continued his stunning 2017 as he dashed to another World Junior and European Junior Record in the men’s 50 free. Kolesnikov posted a top qualifying time of 23.10 to lower his own records of 23.28, set in Kazan, Russia in November of 2017.

Jeremy Stravius of France grabbed the second place seed with a time of 23.36, followed by Italy’s Simone Sabbioni and his time of 23.50.

Close behind Sabbioni was a tie for the fourth place seed between Romania’s Catalin-Paul Ungur and Belarus’ Pavel Sankovich. The duo posted matching times of 23.52.

Christian Diener of Germany turned in the sixth fastest time of the morning with a 23.53, just ahead of Poland’s Kacper Stokowski‘s 23.54 and Romania’s Robert Glinta’s 23.59.

Qualifying ninth through sixteenth were Italy’s Niccolo’ Bonacchi (23.66), Switzerland’s Thierry Frederic Bollin (23.77), Russia’s Nikita Ulyanov (23.84), Greece’s Apostolos Christou (23.88), Portugal’s Alexis Manacas Santos (23.91), Ireland’s Conor Ferguson (23.97), Belarus’ Viktar Staselovich (23.97), and Germany’s Marek Ulrich (23.97).

Women’s 200 Breast

Vitalina Simonova continued the top seed heat for Russia by claiming the top spot in the women’s 200 breast prelims. She posted a time of 2:20.51 to narrowly lead the qualifying field.

Qualifying hot on Simonova’s heals were Spain’s Jessica Vall Montero and Marina Garcia Urzainqui with times of 2:20.58 and 2:20.59 respectively.

Fanny Leculyse of Belgium posted a 2:21.03 to qualify fourth overall, followed by Denmark’s Rikke Moeller Pedersen and her time of 2:21.15.

Great Britain’s Jocelyn Ulyett (2:21.88), Germany’s Jessica Steiger (2:22.94), and France’s Fanny Deberghes (2:23.67) were sixth through eighth.

Men’s 200 Fly

 

Laszlo Cseh of Hungary nabbed the top seed in the men’s 200 fly prelims, stopping the clock at a time of 1:52.27. Qualifying close on his heels was Russia’s Aleksandr Kharlanov with a time of 1:52.34.

Greece’s Andreas Vazaios posted a 1:52.80 for the third place seed, followed by Denmark’s Viktor Bromer and his time of 1:53.00.

Tamas Kenderesi of Hungary grabbed fifth in prelims with a 1:53.45, while Norway’s Tomoe Zenimoto Hvas was sixth with a 1:53.61.

Estonia’s Kregor Zirk and the Netherlands’ Joeri Verlinden rounded out the top eight with times of 1:53.75 and 1:54.13.

Women’s 400 Free

Germany’s Sarah Koehler led a trio of 4:04’s to the final of the women’s 400 free. Koehler earned the top seed with a time of 4:04.31, followed by Spain’s Melanie Costa Schmid (4:04.56) and Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas (4:04.84).

Kathryn Greenslade of Great Britain took fourth in prelims with a 4:05.35, followed by Liechtenstein’s Julia Hassler’s 4:05.90.

Russia’s Veronica Andrusenko (4:05.97), Italy’s Simona Quadarella (4:06.06), and Portugal’s Diana Margarida Dureas (4:06.97) completed the top eight qualifiers.

Men’s 4×50 Medley Relay

Belarus’ relay of Pavel SankovichIlya Shymanovich, Yauhen Tsurkin, and Anton Latkin turned in the top qualifying time of the men’s 4×50 medley relay with a 1:32.29.

Qualifying second overall was Russia’s relay team of Nikita Ulyanov, Kirill Prigoda, Aleksandr Sadovnikov, and Mikhail Vekovishchev with a 1:32.87.

Germany picked up the third place seed with a 1:33.44, followed by Poland’s 1:34.12.

Italy (1:34.18), Finland (1:34.39), Turkey (1:34.39), and the Netherlands (1:34.72) also qualified for finals.

Women’s 4×50 Medley Relay

The Russian medley relay team of Anastasia Fesikova, Natalia Ivaneeva, Rozaliya Nasretdinova, and Maria Kameneva nabbed a solid first place seed in prelims of the 4×50 medley relay with a time of 1:45.88.

Picking up the second place seed was the Dutch relay team of Kira Toussaint, Kim Busch, Maaike de Ward, and Tamara van Vliet with a combined 1:46.38.

The third place seed was earned by France with a 1:46.43, just ahead of Finland’s 1:46.82.

Poland (1:47.23), Italy (1:47.37), Sweden (1:47.40), and Denmark (1:48.07) qualified fifth through eighth.

didn’t Vladimir Morozov win the 50 free earlier this week? isn’t it supposed to be the men’s 50 back?
