Women’s 100-meter Free

Amanda Weir held on to her top spot in the women’s 100-meter free after her 54.64-second performance in prelims at USA Nationals. The Olympic silver medalist splashed to a 26.21 first 50 split, the fastest amongst the field. She returned in 28.43, just enough to hold off second-place finisher Allison Schmitt. Schmitt posted a 54.81 by splitting 26.85/27.96.

Men’s 200-meter Back

Dynamo 16-year old Michael Taylor nabbed the top seed in the men’s 200-meter back prelim at USA Nationals. Taylor entered the meet seeded fourth, but dropped nearly a second to claim to top slot. Taylor’s 1:58.41 was comprised of fairly solid splitting:

Taylor: 27.91/30.13/30.58/29.79

Griffin Carter is now slated second after his 1:58.51, followed by Jack Conger at 1:58.54. Conger, who has been vocally disappointed with his swims could pull off a win tonight from lane three. Jack Mahoney took fourth with a 1:58.90, while the favorite Jacob Pebley clinched fifth in 1:58.91.

Robert Owen (1:58.92), Austin Katz (1:59.35), and Austin Surhoff (1:59.37) also qualified for the tonight’s top heat.

Women’s 200-meter Breast

Laura Sogar bested the field in prelims of the women’s 200-meter breast at USA Nationals with her 2:25.16 this morning. Sogar dropped nearly a second and a half from her entry time and now holds a 1.17-second cushion over second-place finisher Emma Schoettmer. Sogar swam a very well-rounded race, as her splits indicate:

Sogar: 32.77/36.20/37.72/38.47

Schoettmer touched to a 2:26.33, while Emil Escobedo earned the third seed with a 2:27.64. Molly Hannis clocked a 2:27.94 to take fourth, while the University of Louisville’s Andrea Cottrell grabbed fifth in 2:28.04. Esther Gonzalez Medina trailed immediately behind Cottrell with a 2:28.09.

The number-one seed heading into the meet, Annie Lazor, fell to seventh with a 2:28.79. Annie Zhu ended up being the final qualifier for the championship final with a 2:28.79.

Tonight’s B Final will feature Justine Bowker (2:28.86), Miranda Tucker (2:29.44), Byanca Rodriguez (2:29.59), Haley Spencer (2:29.63), Emily Fogle (2:29.98), Madisyn Cox (2:30.16), Lilly King (2:30.65), and Georgia Bohl (2:30.69).

Men’s 200-meter Breast

After sending shock waves through the swimming world with his sub-minute 100-breast, Emory’s Andrew Wilson clocked a 2:09.84 in the 200-meter breast this morning at USA Nationals to land tonight’s top seed. Wilson displayed a mastery of the event, taking the race out in 1:02.11 and returning in 1:07.73.

Wilson: 29.44/32.67/33.65/34.08

Will Licon claimed the second spot with a 2:10.10, followed by BJ Johnson at 2:11.92. Scoland’s Craig Benson (2:12.14) and Michael Jameison (2:12.17) filled the next two spots.

A rather unfamiliar name to the 200 breaststroke ranks took sixth with a 2:12.68. That would be Michael Phelps, who is coming off of three straight world-best swims in the 200-meter fly, 100-meter fly, and 200-meter IM. Phelps dropped nearly three seconds from his seed time to land in tonight’s championship final.

Phelps: 30.17/33.62/34.47/34.42

Samuel Tierney (2:12.71) and Chuck Katis (2:13.11) round out the top eight and will appear in tonight’s championship final.
