Tom Shields of California looks to have finally shaken off some of the intermittent illnesses he’s been fighting off for the better part of a year.

He led qualifying this morning with a time of 52.78, nearly a second ahead of the rest of the field.

Jack Conger, who is ranked second in the world with a 51.64 from the Austin stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series, raced his way to second in 53.47.

Venezuela’s Albert Subirats wound up third in qualifying in 53.48.

Michael Phelps, who had to shake off a tough 200 free earlier in the session, grabbed fourth in qualifying with a 53.51.

Brazil’s Thiago Pereira (53.53), SwimMAC’s Ryan Lochte (53.62), NCAP’s Andrew Seliskar (563.72) and Canada’s Santo Condorelli (53.93) grabbed the rest of the lanes in the championship heat.

Cesar Cielo, expected to make some noise here in Charlotte, had a suit malfunction en route to a 14th-place 54.31.  He swam the bulk of the race with half of his right leg hanging out of his suit.
