NCAA Men’s Championships, Day 3 Heat Sheets: Leon Marchand Back At It In 400 IM

A night after his sensational NCAA record in the 500 free, Leon Marchand will be back in the pool Friday morning in the 400 IM.

The Frenchman is the top seed and the NCAA record holder in the longer IM. His seed time is a 3:34.66. He’ll be chasing the 3:28.82 that he did last year at NCAAs.

He’ll have familiar company: The second seed is David Schlicht, who was outstanding in finishing sixth in the 200 IM. Zalan Sarkany is ninth and Cale Martter 10th. The Sun Devils lead California by 32 points after two days of the meet.

All three of Thursday’s champs will be looking to add a second crown on Friday. Josh Liendo, the champion in the 50 free, leads the way in the 100 butterfly with a time of 43.89. Hot on his heels is Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan, last year’s champion. Andrei Minakov is in the mix, as is Ilya Kharun of Arizona State. NC State is swimming well and has both Luke Miller and Aiden Hayes in the top eight.

Destin Lasco will be one of several swimmers trying to swim down to the speed of the 100 back. The 200 IM champ will deal with Hubert Kos as the top seed, with Jonny Marshall of Florida second and Lasco third. Reigning silver medalist Kacper Stokowski is fourth, while last year’s champ, Brendan Burns of Indiana, is seventh.

The 200 free might be one of the week’s most wide open event, bereft as it is of NCAA record holder Marchand. Macguire McDuff is the top seed in 1:30.64, but 1:32.00 covers the top 13 swimmers. Charlie Hawke is among them in second, followed by Chris Guiliano and Jordan Crooks. Luke Hobson may be the favorite, despite his eighth seed, and Gabriel Jett finished fourth in the 500. He’s the fifth seed.

Off a sensational 200 medley relay split, Cal’s Liam Bell is the top seed in the 100 breast. Second is Virginia’s Noah Nichols, followed by Carles Coll Marti of Virginia Tech. Aleksas Savickas of Florida is fourth.

Finals will also include 3-meter diving and the 400 medley relay.
